Stacy Bell's long road to recovery.
Hello. As a member of Stacy's extended family I have been asked to set up a GoFundMe page for my brother-in-law, Stacy Bell. I'll do my best! (Please note: 100% of the these funds are only accessible by Stacy and Shelia...as the author, I am only setting this page up for them.)
Stacy and Sheila, his wife, live in a small community named Singleton in the dead center of the state of Mississippi. They are very active people who work hard and love God. They have raised three fine sons; two of which have long since started families of their own.
Their youngest has become a minister; traveled to Haiti, South America, and Africa participating in missionary work; and is currently working with youth in south Mississippi.
Stacy works as an automotive paint specialist at WWL Vehicle Service America, located at the Nissan North America plant in Canton, Ms.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 23'rd at work Stacy felt an overwhelming wave of uneasiness come over him. He sat down until the worst of it had passed. Being the dedicated person he is, he finished out the afternoon, clocked out, and made the long one-hour drive home.
As he neared his home, the unfamiliar sensations of nausea, chest & back pain, and a strange sensation of numbness in his legs and feet started and continued grow. When he arrived home, on the walk from the driveway to the house his legs began to buckle.
He sat down inside wondering what could be wrong as the pain in his upper torso continued to intensify. While calling his wife for help, a wave of pain overwhelmed him to the point he dropped the phone to the floor and was unable to retrieve it.
Sheila, still at work in the nearby town of Carthage rushed home; calling one of their sons who lived nearby on the way. When she arrived she found Stacy incoherent on the floor whith her son over him. They managed to get him to the car and rushed him to the local hospital.
From there he was shortly sent, by ambulance, to the Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Missippi. There the doctors tried desperately to diagnose Stacy's illness.
At first they agreed the problem was viral; as something appeared to be attacking the lining of the nerves in his muscles. The pain was excruciating, he was running a very high fever, and had severe nausea. It was decided to give him antibiotics and high doses of morphine to ease the pain and to make him sleep.
As the doctors continued to run test after test trying to identify the exact cause of his dilima, they changed their tentative diagonosis from "something viral" to the likelyhood of it being a rare condition called Guillain-Barre (gee-YAH-buh-RAY) syndrome which is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. But, this was only a tentative diagonosis.
As the days passed, the doctors continued to run test trying to confirm the diagnosis. Finally, nine or ten days later, results from a spinal tap led the doctors to the conclusion Stacy had had a "SPINAL STROKE"; a disruption in the blood supply to the spinal cord.
Paralized from the waist down, Stacy was transferred on September third to the Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, Mississippi.
Some confusion exists among the staff of the rehab center concerning the final diagnosis. They can not understand how there could have been extreme fever and nausea associated with a spinal stroke. Therefore, the final diagnosis may again change.
At this time, Stacy can move his toes, (which is promising), but can not move his legs. He can not feel pin pricks from the bottom of his feet to his waist. Whether he will ever be able to walk again is still in God's hands.
We are trying to raise funds because even though he has health insurance from work, the co-pays from a ten day stay at the hospital and the ongoing efforts at the rehab center are going to be staggering. Sheila has had to miss a great deal of work so far as well. Mortgage payments, utilities, and travel expenses to and from Jackson will continue to drain their resources as well. They need our help and a lot of it!
Though they are loyal Christians who pray daily and trust Him to see them through this trying time, those of us who love them will continue to do everything we can to help them. YOUR help would be greatly appreciated and is needed immediately. Any financial gift of love you can manage to give will be gratefully received. Please keep the Bell family in your prayers as well...
