Hi, my name is Ramona. I am 15 years old and have recently learned of an opportunity to travel to Belize on an educational ecology trip.
Ecology Project International
Ever since I was three years old and first learned to swim, I have wanted to be a marine biologist.
I have lived in Seattle since I was was two, and consider the waters of and around Seattle a part of me. I have spent many summers wet suiting in the icy waters and night kayaking among bioluminescence on Lopez Island. Growing up in South Park, I have lived most of my life on the polluted Duwamish River. Even at a young age, I knew how much of a problem this was. At five years old, I wrote a poem about the river and performed it at a festival as well as in front of my school.
Ten years later, I began volunteering at the Seattle Aquarium. I am still learning so much through this program. It has been a great way for me to expand my knowledge of our marine environments and most important, taught me how to share this knowledge with others in hope of preserving them.

I have also been fortunate enough that my grandma has a house in Kona, Hawaii, allowing us to visit several times. These trips have always been my favorite! I've gone on a few (very respectful to the animals) wild dolphin swims, and I was absolutely amazed. These trips really encouraged me talk to marine biologists, pay attention in all my science classes, and really push myself to learn as much as I can about marine biology.

This possible Belize trip would be something I know I will remember for the rest of my life. The first part of the eight days will be spent snorkeling, learning about and identifying fish, exploring reefs, watching marine mamals and much more. The later days will be spent in the jungle learning about the rainforest and the creatures that call it home, as well as studying Mayan culture.
The tuition for the entire trip is $4000. This sounds like a lot of money (and it is!) but so far, I have saved up almost $1000 of my own money. I will continue fundraising and saving for this trip- I am determined to make it happen! As soon as I reach my goal, I plan to keep fundraising and donate the extra money to another student struggling to pay the tuition. The trip will also be taking place around my birthday, and donations for this trip would be the best present I could ever ask for! I know money is tight for a lot of people, and I absolutely appreciate anything you can give. Thank you all so much!
