Sunshine Day Care
Centre is based in the small town of Mzuzu in Malawi, Southeast Africa. Malawi
is among the world's least developed countries with poor healthcare, high
unemployment rates and low literacy rates contributing to a country overwhelmed
by poverty. Over 90% of the population
live on less than $2 a day. Sunshine is a day care centre dedicated to providing
a safe, stimulating and fun environment for children aged 1 to 5 years of age.
The centre cares for children from the town of Mzuzu who would otherwise be
left unattended for many hours or be forced into child labour. In caring for
these children, parents have the opportunity to find employment and provide
financially for their futures. The children spend their days socialising,
learning and playing with a large emphasis on acquiring the basics of English.
Activities such as games, singing, stories and counting help to teach them this
vital language, a key tool in their futures. The centre also provides a daily
meal for the children which is always greeted with much excitement and quickly
cleaned up plates!
In September we will be travelling to Mzuzu to spend time with the Malawian couple who run the centre, Dyles and Regiment. Through this trip we hope to gain an understanding of Sunshine's financial costs and to put in place short and long term goals for this project. Of course we will also spend time getting to know each of the 33 beautiful children who call Sunshine home.
This is a cause which is in its infancy and as such requires the basics. Items such as children's tables and chairs, sports equipment, toys and games are needed. Teaching tools including paper, stationary and books are all a necessity for the children's education, not to mention the gold star stickers as a reward for their hard work! Due to shipping costs our aim is to purchase these items in Malawi and deliver them directly to the centre. Funding will also assist in cooking equipment and food supplies for the children's daily meal. With the help of our family and friends we are aiming to raise $3500. With such a large support group and the power of word of mouth we believe we will reach this figure and help change the lives of these children.
Again we thank you for your time, love and support. We are passionate about this project and hope you will share in our enthusiasm for helping these kids.
