This is my brother-in-law, Jason Gaes. If you were to google his name you would find he is a survivor of childhood cancer.
When he was 8 years old, Jason wrote a book called "My Book for Kids with Cansur" and donated 100% of the proceeds from the sale of his book to the American Cancer Society to benefit other kids with the disease. HBO made a documentary film about his diagnosis and recovery called "You Don’t Have to Die" for which they won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Documentary-short subject.
That’s a great story, right?
It is.
Unfortunately that is not the end of Jason's story. In 2002, after 18 years of total remission Jason experienced some vision changes and was diagnosed with a brain tumor caused by the cranial radiation he'd received as a child. Since then he's had 7 brain surgeries that have resulted in partial paralysis of his left hand from a stroke and the loss of about 90% of his vision.
Last week, after 2 years of no tumor activity, he found out this thing is growing again. Cedars Sinai doctors believe radiation treatments twice a day for 3 weeks provides the best chance of stopping the growth without destroying his remaining vision.
We all wish there was something we could do to help Jason fight this thing but there isn't. What we can do is share some of the financial burden this treatment will cost. He doesn't need to worry about that too. He's 38 years old and working is no longer an option. He receives a monthly disability check and has Medicare but that only pays for a portion of his medical costs and he takes multiple medications every day; some of which are not covered by his insurance company at all. He has to pay for those completely out of pocket.
Jason's radiation treatments will be at Cedars Sinai on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles. Because he will have two treatments a day, it makes sense for him and his family to stay as close to the hospital as possible during this time. There are no Ronald McDonald houses or anything of the like for adults, which means he will be paying for three weeks in a hotel room plus the cost of parking, food, etc.
Any donations to support his growing medical costs are greatly appreciated.
Thank you all.
