Mel Royals' new heart
My name is Dawn Proctor and I'm an old and neighbor of Mel's and a new friend of his mama, Betty, and his sister, Shannon. I set this page up on behalf of Mel, a one-of-a- kind father, a thoughtful son, and a friend like everyone should be so lucky to have. Most of you reading this already know that. He's geniunely sincere and has a beautiful soul.
Mel needs a new heart ... the one he has now is bigger than anyone I know, but it's defective. While, the goal states $ 50,000, the truth is the goal is a new heart for Mel and a heart is going to be very, VERY expensive. As Sprout, Mel's son, said "this will mean no more bandaids for Dad". Mel's insurance will cover their portion of the astronomical costs, but that coverage doesn't include the resulting loss of income, upkeep and maintaining his home or the cost of paying his health insurance premiums and day to day expenses. Nor does it cover other associated costs like his mothers extended hotel stays here while we wait or her move to Durham while he fully recovers after the transplant. The average cost in 2015 for a heart transplant and subsequential treatment in the first year was 1.5 million dollars and that figure doesn't include everything to this point. So you can see where your donations, of any size, will help tremendously ease the financial and emotional burden he and his family are facing.
Mel has battled this issue for some time now and he is beyond blessed having been accepted and placed on the National Heart Transplant Registry. He is most likely going to have to stay in the hospital until that life saving heart becomes available. May God bless and keep that donor and their family when the time comes for Mel to get his new heart.
Mel has a beautiful 15 year old daughter, Bella, who loves showing horses and loves her Daddy. He has a 17 year old son, Sprout, who would make any parent's heart burst with pride (he's truely a mini Mel). His mother, Betty, is a strong, amazing woman and a loving sister, Shannon who all just want to see Mel back up and living life to the fullest. Mel, with his positive, upbeat attitude recently joked about 'looking for a heart on Craigslist'.
The outpouring of love and support in the last few weeks have been unbelieveable, he has so many friends and has touched so many lives. Many thanks for your prayers and if you can find it in your heart to help this truely incredible man, Dad, son, brother and friend, your contributions will be appreciated more than any words can ever express.
