My Niece Madison gave birth to baby A'sa James Ross on 8/18/2016. Although they knew from various scans/sonograms that A'sa has Gastroschisis and a Giant Omphalocele Doctors expressed hope that they could improve the situation and save his life through multiple surgeries. To explain these terms- the baby's stomach, intenstines and liver are outside his body with no closure of "the wall". Within a couple hours of his birth via emergency c-section (born during the 34th week of pregnancy) the Surgeon announced that the organs had swelled well passed the average size due to the lack of restriction for growth and were now way to large to fit into his tiny body. He did not mince words telling the family that there was zero chance of sustainability. But baby A'sa is fighting!!!! He has good oxygen levels with very little assistance and is often alert with eyes wide open. The biggest problem he is facing at this point is that the organs can only be restricted in the rotation of the cone and bags they use to hold them in place. He has just recently developed a dark spot on his insestines due to this placement. Although it is like pulling teeth to get answers/information from the NICU we have done our own research and we are led to believe it is due to a restriction in blood flow and the organs will slowly start to shut down. We finally found another hospital who will accept baby A'sa with his condition and has expressed hope something can be done but the health insurance will not cover ground or air medical transport (but will however cover the cost of his care once he is there) which could be as high as $10k. In addition his Mommy (who was discharged Monday) and Daddy have exhausted their funds between lodging, food, small mechanical fixes to their vehicle and gas. They normally live over two hours one-way from the hospital. And to top it all off their car is experiencing various mechanical issues. These poor parents are near sleepless and riddled with stress, anxiety and heartbreak as they watch their only child deteriorate in front of their eyes while they are helpless to save him. Due to the extent of the medical conditions they have never had the chance to so much as hold their little angel. I am an emotional wreck myself watching all of this unfold while the hospital keeps him "comfortable" until what we are told is his inevitable passing. I am asking for help. I want to raise enough money to get A'sa his transport so he will have a chance. I also want to help his Mom and Dad with food and lodging so they can stop eating jello, crackers and whatever little things they can get their hands on with their non-existent budget. I am the only family they have even remotely near the hospital and I of course have opened my doors to them but most of the time they sleep in the car at or near the hospital with the cost of gas and the constant mechanical issues with their vehicle it is the only answer to keep them close to the baby and have the ability to spend every day with him. The Hospital currently does not have any family rooms/suites available for them and with the cost of nearby hotels in that part of Dallas, that option is not in the cards for them.
My husband and I have given as much as we can in an effort to help but we have a large family and can only do so much. Much of the rest of the family is on meager budgets themselves just trying to get by so they aren't able to help out much financially.
Imagine if this was your child or your grandchild and you were in this horrible position. Would your heart not ache the same way? Would you not do anything to give that child the best chance? Would you not reach out for help? Please consider donating to get this baby transferred and sustain these parents with the most basic of needs. Every single dollar will make a difference. Any and all monies raised will be under the control of the parents. I have no involvement in handling of the funds. My only job is to spread the word and continue providing whatever support I can and continue to try and be their shoulder to cry on. Thank you for your consideration. Even if you are unable to contribute financially will you please be so kind as to pass this along, share and draw attention to this cause? Thank you again.
