On Wednesday, July 27th, Laurie Thornton, my mother in law, went to Florida Hospital for some gastro intestinal issues and her life changed that day. She left the hospital five days later with the news that she has cancer. The type of cancer is to be determined during and after surgery, but it is probably either duodenal carcenoma (very rare) or pancreatic cancer (very bad). She will re-enter the hospital on Friday, August 12th for a surgery know as the Whipple Procedure. Go ahead, Google it, we can wait.
If you did not visit Google yet, the Whipple Procedure is performed for pancreatic or duodenal cancer and removes part of the pancreas, the duodenum, the gallbladder, the bile ducts and part of the stomach. It is one of the most complex and invasive surgeries that is performed and requires a hospital stay of weeks and a recovery period of months. Once the surgery is performed, which will confirm the exact type of cancer, Laurie will need to recover, regain her strength, and then start a regimin of chemotherapy and / or radiation.
All of the above is a long way of saying that Laurie will not be able to return to work anytime soon. In the meantime, without income, her normal expenses will continue to pile up, which says nothing of the newfound, and nearly unfathomable medical expenses she is going to experience.
I know that Laurie has touched many people's lives in her 57 years on this earth. If you are reading this, there is a good chance she has touched yours. I could write a book on the ways Laurie has affected my life, but I will be brief, and say that I consider her a 2nd mother and one of the most impotant people on this earth to me. If Laurie has touched your life, I ask for one thing; if you are in a financial position, please help her through this time with a donation. No donation is too small. And if you are not in a position to give financially, then keep her in your thoughts and prayers, because in addition to money, she will also need lots of good energy flowing her way.
Thank you.
