When schools closed for Covid 19, classrooms moved online. However, for many of our students, this means their educational materials are inaccessible. Over 30% of them do not have internet access or computers. We are fundraising for hotspots, data plans, chromebooks, and supplies (books, packets, etc) for my classroom, so that students with limited resources have access to complete their education!
Our students are among the most vulnerable in Oakland. Some are without stable housing, some are in foster care, some have just exited the criminal justice system. 99% are POC and 100% receive free or reduced lunch. Their families are really struggling during this time, and many of my students are working full time on the front lines as essential workers, to help pay rent and support their families. These kids, despite the adversity they’ve been through, still want to finish high school and better their lives through education.
