Lance and Magdalena are close friends of mine who are really struggling. They, along with their sons Nicolas and Colby are a wonderful family living in Cranston, Calgary. They are genuine, compassionate and doing their best to raise two successful and happy young boys. They have had no previous health issues and life in a family of four was busy but good. Suddenly, this spring everything changed.
In April of 2016, the Magdalena was diagnosed with stage four Glioblastoma, a very aggressive and life threatening brain tumor. It is possible that you have recently heard news coverage about glioblastoma because the lead singer of the much loved Canadian band The Tragically Hip, Gord Downie, has gone public with his own recent glioblastoma diagnosis. This type of tumor is fast growing and the experts say that it is unclear what triggers it. Similar to Gord Downie, just days after her diagnosis, she underwent brain surgery to remove "the bulk" of the tumor.
Shortly after the start of chemo and radiation, they found out their youngest son, Colby also has cancer, namely Hodgkin's Lymphoma. His unexpected and devastating diagnosis came less than two months after hers.
Throughout the summer, Magdalena and Colby have been going back and forth to the Tom Baker Cancer Center and The Alberta Children's Hospital for treatments. They are both undergoing many weeks of Chemotherapy, as well as six weeks of Radiation Therapy. Their immunities are low and so are their spirits.
Just when we thought things were about as bad as they could get, Magdalena's life insurance company contacted them to say it was null and void because she didn't disclose numbness associated with childbirth! Then, Colby's diagnosis was raised from a stage 2 to stage 4. Lance and Magdalena are looking for a lawyer to see if they have a case regarding the insurance issue.
The family is devastated. It is hard to stay positive when the last few months have brought so much pain and crushing burdens into their lives. Magdalena is troubled and disappointed that she may not get to finish raising her children. That she won't get to grow old with the love of her life or watch her boys graduate and get married. The insurance company had the opportunity to make what is remaining of her life more comfortable, and and to leave a legacy behind for their boys. Instead, they were let down and left alone.
I am hopeful that our great community will come together and show them love and support. We can help fundraise to make up for what the insurance company refuses to do. We can ease some of the financial burden and show Lance, Magdalena, Nicolas and Colby that they are not alone in this battle.
