Jason "J.D." Smith's Brain Fund

Husband, Dad, Son, Brother, Uncle, Detective, SWAT Team Member, Combat Marine, and Friend are many of the titles associated with Jason (J.D.) Smith. In times of need, family pulls together to help carry the load, soldiers rally together to keep each other safe, police officers have each others' six, and friends do whatever they can to ease any possible burden.
The surreal medical nightmare for J.D. Smith and his family began on Easter Sunday 2016. With no history or warning, J.D. went into seizure-like activity, passed out, and woke up with no idea what had happened. His two young daughters witnessed this frightening event and were terrified.
Several doctors and tests later, it was determined that he had a growing brain tumor on the right side of his head that had to be removed. The surgery would require 2 highly specialized surgeons. The tumor would be removed and some tissue from his abdomen would be used to fill the area where the tumor was located. Surgery day was in Shreveport, LA on July 25, 2016.
Several things have happened since surgery...First of all, God answered prayers and brought J.D. out of surgery alive. You see, during surgery, he had a heart attack. While in ICU, he was diagnosed with blood clots to both of his lungs. After coming home, the complications have continued. The swelling on the right side of his head slowly increased. He went for a follow-up on August 11 and 80ml of fluid was drained from his head. He went back on August 15, was told it was spinal fluid, admitted back to ICU at the hospital in Shreveport, and a lumbar drain was placed to decrease the fluid and hopefully stop it. Also, what began as a pinpoint drain site to his abdomen is now about the size of a notecard and is requiring a constant wound vac.
Another brain surgery is scheduled for August 22. The surgeons will go in at the original surgical site, attempt to locate the spinal fluid leak and apply a patch to stop the leak.
J.D. and his family do not ask for help. They are the ones that are always helping others during rough times. Please join us in giving back to a family that has given so much to our country, community, and anyone in need. Money raised through this fund will go directly to J.D. and Tara Smith to be used for any expenses related to his care or expenses incurred while Tara remains at his side 2 hours away from their home and children.
