The Booth Family

As a friend of the whole Booth family, I set up a GoFundMe to help with medical bills and to ensure the family can focus on their baby. May we keep them in our prayers and thoughts through such a horrific period in their lives. Please read their story below:

On Thursday may 2nd 2024 our lives changed forever. Octavia and I were cutting the grass, and she fell off the mower, and she lost her 4 digits on her left hand, we called 911, and we collected her fingers and we put them on ice, we wrapped her hand and held it tight, and above her heart waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

When the sheriff got here before ems, he was saying that in such a traumatic moment, he was please to see all the proper steps taken for our little Octavia.

When the ems got here, Nathan and Octavia were transferred to Toledo children’s hospital, where they did blood work, and x rays to determine if the fingers/hand was fixable. Upon the Drs there, they agreed that transferring Octavia to University of Michigan was her best chance to keep her digits.

Nathan was at the hospital with Octavia, when she had to be put in life flight alone, they stated no passengers were aloud to go with her, they gave her pain meds, and off to sleep she went on an helicopter.

Nathan called me, and I was rushing around at home to get Brielle off the bus, and to speak to the officers again to explain to them word for word what happened,
Lela and Kimmy came to the house, so I could start heading to University of Michigan, and Kimmy headed to Toledo hospital to pick up Nathan.

When I arrived at the university, Octavia wasn’t there yet, so I was waiting ( a parents worse fear) and when they called me I went running to see my baby, it had been a few hours since I had last saw her. When I arrived in the room, they had her comfortable with meds, and they had a tablet playing, she was watching cocomelon. When she seen me she started yelling out mommy, my heart stopped/broke/shattered, she said I have to pee! And right then, I knew my Rosie would be okay, my tough little warrior, in all the pain, and trauma taking place, my little lady, still wanted to go on the potty.

There were a lot of doctors and nurses flooding the room, they were coming in to take pictures, to get them to the hand surgeon as quickly as possible. The hand surgeon wanted X-rays of her hand and her fingers to see what would be saved.

Grandma Julie and papa Scott arrived, and when the got there, grandma came back first. (Only two visitors) Octavia was in good spirits to see grandma and kept saying she had a bambaid on her. We sat and waited, X-ray came in, grandma went back to the waiting room, and mommy went to X-ray with Rosie.

When we got into X-ray, I was explaining to the tech, Octavia had not seen her hand yet, and with best attempts, Octavia ended up seeing her hand, she was a little worked up, but with all the pain meds they had her on, she was not freaking out. They took multiple X-rays of the fingers and her hand.

When we arrived back into our room we called grandma Amy, and they share a strange liking to licking each other, so they laughed on the phone and licked each other, Octavia was happy to talk to grandma on the phone, papa Scott came to see Octavia, and she was happy to see papa, and call him poopy, (no idea, she just started laughing and calling him that) spent a little time, and then the resident working under the hand surgeon came in.

The resident was explaining to me, that this type of accident is more common in children then people realize, she then began telling me, that I need to prepare myself, because they don’t believe they can reattach any fingers. She went through what they would do, and what they would attempt. Stated they would take the fingers into the OR, and they would clean them, and see if the X-rays missed something, while they cleaned her hand. So I signed the consent, and it got the ball rolling, they gave Octavia morphine, and then they told me it was time to go to pre op.

Before we were on our way to preop we called daddy, and we talked to Kimmy Lela Brielle and Kade. Daddy was getting things around to come up to the hospital with us. We talked on the phone for a few minutes and then we told daddy they were ready to take us upstairs.

When we got upstairs Octavia was still in good spirits, we met the whole team that would be in the room with Octavia during her surgery. We hung out for just a few short minutes when they told us it was time for love and snuggles before she went back, we had to call daddy and tell him, he was on his way driving. We gave our love to our baby, and we told them her blanky was her pride and joy, not to lose it and keep it with her as long as she could have it.

Then the wait started. We were shown to the waiting room. Where my mind kept wondering to the what ifs and all the worst things that could happen. Waiting in that room felt like the time had stopped and I just needed it to go faster. The nurse came out, and told us everything was going as planned, and Octavia was doing well. She stated that the doctor would be out soon to talk to us. Then my mind went back to the what ifs, and I was trying to be strong for my little warrior, but the tears started to fall, and my emotions were starting to come to the surface. Daddy finally arrived, and mommy and daddy sat there crying together about our little rose.

When the doctor came out, the doctor stated they were unable to reattach the digits, but were able to close her hand, originally they said, they might have to stitch her hand to her groin until there was enough skin to reclose. Stated we would be there for several days with a few surgery’s. So when the doctor stated he was able to close successfully, it was a little bit of a relief, that Octavia wouldn’t have to adapt to not only her hand being stuck to her leg, she wouldn’t have to go under another surgery right away. The doctor told us, there was to much bone/tissue/muscle missing to reattach the digits. Daddy was extremely upset when the dr said that, the dr gave us his regards and left, daddy walked away too.

Mommy was grateful that there wasn’t another surgery scheduled, but I was also upset they were unable to save her fingers. Daddy came back, and we talked a little bit, and waited for post op to call us back to Octavia. after 40 minutes of waiting I called them, asking about Octavia. A nurse came out to get us to take us back to Octavia.

When we arrived to Octavia she was still sleeping, and the nurse stated she was just waiting on her to wake up, and thought we’d have better luck attempting. Mommy and daddy standing next to Octavia’s bed, talking to her until she opened her eyes, she was in good spirits, and wanted her cuppy, that mommy made sure to bring, she got her cup and a million stickers. She was putting her stickers everywhere. Her arm was all wrapped up, and it was resting on blankets next to her.

The nurse kept telling us that she was doing great for what she had went through. Our sweet little Rosie. The nurse told us, they were getting our room ready to move, since they admitted her. The nurse that was going to take over, came and talked to us about Octavia needing to be in a crib, but stated if we were comfortable she would put Octavia in a regular bed, and one of us could stay in the bed with her. So we agreed to the big bed and waited a little while longer.

When we arrived to our new room, grandma and papa gave their love and went home for the night. Mommy and daddy sat with Octavia eating snacks and drinking slushes we watched tv for a little while, and when Octavia said she was tired, mommy got all snuggled up next to her in the bed. Octavia fell fast asleep, and daddy was laying on the chair, mommy couldn’t sleep, just kept replaying this nightmare in my head over and over again. When I finally did catch myself dozing off, the nurses came in to check on Octavia and give her medicine. They kept stating she was doing well, and didn’t want to wake her for her meds, but I thought otherwise, I told them to wake her up for her meds. So she got up for her meds, and she went back to sleep shortly after. I laid there, and still kept picturing my worst nightmare.

Then it was morning, I called and got our little peanut her breakfast and we sat up watching bluey on tv while we waited. They told us we could go home! But we had to wait for her medicine to be ready in the pharmacy before they could print our discharge paperwork.

Our little warrior was still doing well, she was asking to go potty, she walked to the bathroom herself, and was adapting fast to only using her one arm. When we came back in her nurse came in with more medicine. She was still pleased to see how well Octavia was doing.

When Octavia’s breakfast got there, she was eating her pancakes and sausage. Doing well. When the nurse came back in to give her medicine, Octavia “choked” as she says on the medicine. She puked on herself and mommy, and then wouldn’t take her medicine.

The nurse came in several more times giving us little updates on the pharmacy and checking on Octavia. Octavia started to get a little sad, and wanted to call Lela and Kade, so she FaceTimed her brother and her brother as always made her smile and laugh.

When she brought us our discharge papers, we were instructed that someone would call us to make her appt for her follow up.

Mommy and Octavia sat in a wheelchair and daddy pushed us to the pharmacy, yes we thought we were lost in the giant hospital!

Once we got the meds, we headed towards the car, Octavia was definitely excited to see that we were going home. On our car ride home, Octavia slept.

When we pulled into the driveway, Kimmy and Kade greeted Octavia at the car. Octavia was definitely happy, she kept saying home home. We walked into the front door where Kade Lela and Kimmy had a little get well box full of goodies for Octavia. She was so excited to see all the candy she had gotten. Kade gave her a big ol hug. And made sure to not hurt her Ouchy.

Brielles bus was coming, so mommy went to get Brielle off of the bus. Brielles eyes were so happy when she seen mommy, and then she seen that mommy and daddy’s cars were home, so she knew that everyone was back home. When she came into the house, she started asking lots of questions about Octavia.

We sat down as a family and explained to Brielle and Kade that the accident that took place the day before hurt Octavia and it made her a little different. Brielle started to cry, and asked if her fingers would just grow back, and for her being a 6 year old she was definitely being strong while asking these questions. She wanted to hug Octavia but was a little scared to hurt her, so mommy said she’d help, and once Brielle gave Octavia a hug she felt a lot better. Kade asked questions too, he was asking how she’d open things and still play. Octavia got off the couch and showed her brother how she’d do all these things because she began playing, so Brielle and Kade went and they all played with balloons.

Watching all 3 kids interact together made Mommys heart a little less hurt, watching Brielle and Kade adapt just like Octavia but still treating her the same. Kade was a little more careful than normal and kept making sure his sisters Ouchy was okay.

Daddy asked Octavia what she wanted for dinner, and she said candy cake and cookies. Daddy said it sounded like a good dinner to him. When mommy asked Octavia said French fries and nuggies from McDonald’s, so daddy went and got us McDonald’s and don’t forget cookies!

Octavia was doing well until it was time to take her meds again, she started crying and kept saying choke, this is where the struggle started. Trying to keep your child from pain, but won’t take the meds. Big brother and sister stepped in, and Octavia took her meds. But the next time it was time for her meds, we didn’t get so lucky. We attempted to mix them in her cup, and our smart little cookie knew they were in there, and would no longer drink her cup.

Mommy Kade and Octavia went to lay in mommy’s bed, and daddy and Brielle were on the couch. Mommy was so exhausted, I don’t even remember falling asleep, but when I woke up I heard Octavia crying, daddy was already in Octavia’s room with her, she woke up to a bad dream. And she was due for more meds.

With the unsuccessful attempts to give her meds, mommy and daddy had no choice but to make her take them.

Once she took her meds, she asked for her cuppy and cocomelon.

She is now sleeping with daddy at the foot of her bed, mommy laying next to her bed; and Brielle and Kade on the top bunk.

One thing I can truly say is we are a strong family. We have a very close bond I’m grateful for.

This is a parents worst nightmare, not being able to give or fix your child. To take all the pain away. This has been the hardest couple of days, but Octavia is a warrior. And has an amazing support system, and we will get through this.

Octavia has her follow up appt coming up this week, where they will talk about what comes next, if prosthetics will be something we can get, and how long she has to keep her hand covered.

This is rough for us all, and at this time, we are asking to send your love support and prayers to our sweet little Rosie, we don’t really want visitors right now, as we are adjusting to our new lives.

Thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and prayers. We truly are grateful for the support from our friends and family.
