Fighting for Cruz
Donation protected
My name is Laura Fremming and I am creating this page on behalf of my best friend Caela and her husband Adalid Rios. Their son Cruz has been fighting for his life since the day he was born. He is a champion fighter and any help we can give will make a difference for this little boy.
Cruz was born on his due date of June 17, 2016. His parents, Adalid and Caela, and his older sister, Sawyer, were overjoyed to meet him. The entire pregnancy had been healthy and normal by all accounts so it came as a complete surprise when he was whisked off to the NICU. Over the next couple of days it became clear that Cruz needed the best medical care possible to help him survive. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins on June 22, 2016 and has been in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit ever since.

Johns Hopkins has diagnosed Cruz with Pierre Robin Sequence, Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), broncho- and trachomalacia , and lung disease. To date, Cruz has been to the operating room on 4 separate occasions, has had 7 procedures and has been intubated and medically paralyzed for an extended period of time. He has had a mandibular distraction surgery as well as a tracheostomy . The trach allows Cruz to breathe without being intubated and he will have it for the next few years of his life.

Cruz has at least three more surgeries ahead of him, including an open heart surgery in the next few weeks to close the VSD. He has a long road ahead of him to recovery. Once he has graduated from intensive care he will be transferred to a rehab hospital after which he will come home. When he is home he will require an in-home nurse.
The more Caela and Adalid learn about his condition, the more they realize the hurdles they will have to overcome as a family. This includes both parents missing time from work, driving to and from Baltimore each day (sometimes twice a day), childcare for Cruz's sister Sawyer and all that comes with his medical care both inpatient and outpatient (which extends far beyond what is covered by insurance).
There will be an insurmountable amount of out of pocket expenses for the Rios family. Any help you can give in support of Cruz will make a difference -- whether it's sharing this page, prayers or a monetary donation. Cruz hasn't stopped fighting and we won't either. Let's all come together and help Cruz get the care he needs.
