Hi my name is Nic Shangle,
I recently found out that a good friend of mine, Jessi Lopez, was in a terrible accident that caused him to lose part of his leg. These things always seem to happen to the good people in our lives. Jessi is a very selfless and kind person. He didn't even want anyone to know the extent of his injuries. I had to convince him that it was okay to let people know. That it isn't something he needs to shoulder on his own. He has many amazing friends that I'm sure can relate to something tragic happening in their own lives and how helpless and isolated it can make them feel. Please help me get Jessi through this financially, emotionally and physically difficult time. He has an amazing fiance that he recently became engaged to a few months before his accident. I think that she has the emotional recovery under control. We can all chip in and ease the financial side together! The guy needs a new leg so he can keep chasing his (soon to be) step son around and lifting weights in the gym ;)
Here is the story of where he is now:
On June 30th, 2016 Jessi was struck by a truck while riding his Harley to work. He was rushed to the hospital and was immediately taken into surgery. After surgery, his orthopedic surgeon sat down with him to advise him that his left foot suffered numerous amounts of injuries. She stated that he had two options:
1. Reconstruction - with the help of the plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeon they will attempt to reconstruct his foot. If Jessi went with this option, he will need many surgeries in the future.
2. Amputation – His leg will be amputated below the knee
The surgeon explained that if he were to go with option one, he will have an abnormal foot and would not be able to wear shoes or sandals. He would have to wear a custom made boot. She also said that he could be in pain for the rest of his life.
After having this conversation with his surgeon, Jessi turned to his family for advice. With the help of those closest to him, he was able to make a decision. He decided to proceed with amputation because this was the best decision for someone his age as well as the goals he wished to accomplish in his life.
Jessi had three surgeries before he decided to proceed with amputation. His amputation surgery took place on July 11th.
According to Jessi, “This was the toughest decision I ever had to make, but I know I made the best decision”
He was discharged on July 14th and was finally able to return home after being in the hospital for 14 days.
Jessi is going to have many medical bills to pay in the near future. He will also need a new prosthetic leg. I would like everyone to join me in trying to help ease that pain for him as his friends and family. We can't help him with the mental or physical recovery, but I think he has that under control by being as strong and positive as he is!
