Henry Adams once said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” That is incredibly true of teachers in all fields. Teachers touch lives but never know the extent to which their influence reaches and spreads beyond the classroom. One such teacher who has affected his students far beyond the classroom, is Mr. Gregory Oldacre of Somerset Academy South Homestead. Greg Oldacre has been teaching for numerous years and has dedicated much of his teaching career to serving low-income students in South Florida. He has been named Teacher of the Year at Somerset Academy, two consecutive years in 2014 and 2013 as a result of his incredible dedication to his craft. Among his many teaching duties, Mr. Oldacre goes above and beyond the call of duty. It is not out of the ordinary to find him working on a Saturday or Sunday tutoring students for free or completing handy work around the building. During the summer and various school breaks, he devotes his free time again, tutoring students and helping maintain the school facilities. He arrives to school at what seems like, the crack of dawn and leaves long after the bell rings.
In addition to his great commitment to educating young people, Greg and his wife Sue are avid animal lovers. They spend much of their free time rescuing, fostering and finding forever homes for abandoned and mistreated animals. To this day, they have helped find forever homes for an immeasurable amount of animals in South Florida. Furthermore, Greg and Sue have taken on the task of caring for Sue’s elderly mother who is, for the most part, incapacitated and cannot care for herself. Their love and passion for people and animals alike is evident in all they do and is something so many people admire about them.
All of these responsibilities have taken on a greater meaning, when Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Sue and Greg have had to endure countless doctor appointments, chemotherapy treatments and finally several rounds of radiation. Unfortunately, after receiving treatment for breast cancer, Sue’s doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to other parts of her body including her brain. Nonetheless, Greg and Sue remained strong and continued with treatment. Despite this new obstacle in their lives, neither Sue nor Greg have stopped doing what they love or caring for the people they love. However, the cost of treatment has skyrocketed even with the assistance from insurance.
Please help support a truly fabulous couple who have given so much of themselves to others in the wake of so much being taken from them. This request is not being made by the Oldacre Family but on their behalf by the lives they have touched so deeply.
