Chris' Recovery Campaign

Donation protected
My name is Scott Lee and I am the shift commander assigned to District Two Delta Platoon at the Daytona Beach Police Department.  District Two Delta Platoon is attempting to raise money for one of our officers who was severely injured in a crash.

During the early morning hours of August 1, 2016 one of our officers, Chris Maher, was finishing up a 12-hour shift.  Officer C. Maher was driving west on Bellevue Avenue approaching S. MLK Boulevard.  As he approached the intersection a vehicle ran the red light on S. MLK Boulevard and unexpectedly turned out in front of Officer C. Maher.  Officer C. Maher took evasive measures to avoid striking the citizen's vehicle and swerved to the right.  Unfortunately, immediately to the right was a large solid concrete power pole which he struck head on at full speed.  The citizen stopped and units immediately responded to the scene to assist Chris.  Chris was transported to the hospital.

X-rays revealed that the bulk of the force from the crash had travelled up his right leg causing his hip to dislocate from the socket and the socket to fracture in multiple places.  We recognize that Chris is lucky to have survived this crash but we also know there is a long road to recovery.  Chris will most likely not be able to return to full duty for at least six months.

Chris is a hardworking officer who shows up ready to work everyday and cares about his community.  Even while lying in the bed injured he made sure to tell me about his special checks he had done in areas of concern we had discussed in previous shifts.  What Delta Platoon also knows about Chris is that he is a father of a beautiful baby girl and he works numerous hours of overtime and special outside details to help provide a wonderful life to her and his family. Unfortunately, he will not be able to work any overtime or outside details until he can return to full duty and workers compensation will not cover the losses of overtime and outside details.  Delta Platoon has averaged his last four months of overtime and details and determined that Chris will lose approximately $9000.00 in income over the next six months.  Our hope is to raise this money for him so that he does not need to be stressed about this while also dealing with the stress of rehabilitation and recovery.

We have not told Chris about this and are hoping to surprise him.  We know this would help him and his family out tremendously and it would help us as a platoon and agency help to support our brother in blue.  As cops we understand that sometimes it is difficult to donate money but any amount will help Chris.  If you cannot donate please at least re-post this message or link to the GoFundMe page.  Thank you for taking the time to read our message and donating.  Please stay safe.
