On 5/24/24 at roughly 630pm we received a call that instantly brought us to tears. Another of our friends was struck head-on on his bike by a car who impatiently ran road signage leaving him no time to safely maneuver off the road. Unfortunately this caused our dear friend Mike to collide head on with the crossing vehicle on Route 21/Liberty Highway by the Putnam town line.
While the 3 motorists in the car declined medical treatment and went upon their day. Mike was instead rushed to near by Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT and soon after Life Flighted to UMass with a multitude of injuries.
At 730pm 5/24 at DKH he was found to have multiple fractures to his right arm and they speculated damage to his hips.
At 1am 5/25 his Mom Christine reported that upon their arrival to UMass they found he had several broken ribs, inwhich one pierced his lung causing blood to pool internally and collapse his lung. They then inserted a chest tube for drainage and O² for supplemental support.
At 430am 5/25 his sister Jess reported "He’s in rough shape. He has a fractured hip, several broken ribs, may need some screws in the bottom of his spine (possible spinal fractures), broken arm and shattered elbow, and they’re draining blood still from his collapsed lung."
Mike is now waiting for surgery once he’s more stable.
Update 630pm 5/25 It is estimated that Mike will go in for the first of his surgeries either Tuesday or Wednesday. He's alert, but restless.
Update 11:30am 5/26: Mike still remains stable for the most part. They have added his foot to the list of injuries in which he needs surgeries for. He has not been able to rest and is in extreme pain which had caused his HR to sky rocket. At the moment the at monitoring his HR and trying to treat his pain via medication. They have decided due to these issues it may be best he goes in for surgery sooner and they are now hoping to take him in tomorrow instead.
Update 7pm 5/25 Mike called today. He is still in alot of pain but hopeful for a speedy recovery. He sends many thanks to all who have shown him support!
Update noon 5/27: They've found yet another injury. Mike has also broken his clavicle. On top of that his bloodwork came back that his H&H was alarmingly low which required him to get a blood transfusion today. They believe the source of the bleed is from his punctured lung but can't be positive until it is considered healed or they find a separate source of bleeding. They are hoping to bring him in for an array of surgeries later today.
Please keep it coming we have met 1/4 of our goal in less than 2 days. That's amazing!
However, despite all his pain Mike's first words once at DKH were "How's my bike?" and "How am I go to work?".
This undoubtedly will be a long road to recovery for Mike. He will likely be out of work for many months as he undergoes several surgeries and many months of Physical Therapy.
If you know Mike, then you know he is ALWAYS the first to lend a helping hand, the shirt off his back or his last dollar to help others.
Now it is our turn to show him the love and support he has behind him.
While the physical recovery falls on him, let's ban together to help ease his stress in any other way we can. Every dollar helps! And if you can't donate, all we ask is that you share Mike's story.
