BABY LUCAS UPDATE! 8/22/16
***LUCAS UPDATE***
More solid forward steps for little Lucas.
He continues to get stronger on the bottle. In fact he has been doing so well that he has been able to practice at breastfeeding for short periods of time. Mom and baby are excited about this and elayssa is doing her best to pump ( Every 2 hrs! ) to keep up with his appetite. She's beyond exhausted but overjoyed to feed him.
Secondly, no tubes! Except for his god given ones, no more tubes. IV out, feeding tube out, and of course respirator still out.
Seeing his entire face without wires or tubes was a huge moment for us.
He has been moved into a new NICU unit, which is good as this indicates his status is much less tenuous.
Compared to a week ago he is a different baby. He is a more 'babyish' baby by far.
Out of the woods? No. But he is stepping boldly forward. Go Lucas!
Although his medication has been reduced he is still being kept sedate to protect against seizure and brain irritations. We get little peeks of lucid Lucas and whenever these happen we are in wonder of the little soul kept inside.
Next hurdles are to stabilize his meds and keep putting weight on.
It's rare that dad and mom have a moment to check here but when we do we are overwhelmed by the good wishes and gracious giving of love.
Thank you for caring for our weary hearts and spirits. When we feel fear and unease we look to your words and wishes to help bolster us. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
This is the message we received from them: 8/13/16
"Elayssa had a smooth, perfect pregnancy and went into an equally smooth and beautiful labor until the very last few minutes.
At this time we were expecting to be moments away from holding our precious baby but instead were shocked to see he was about to be born in a breech position. Little Lucas Aurelian Helms' head became stuck and for about 4 minutes did not have much/any oxygen reaching his brain until his head cleared the birth canal.
Every effort was made to get him out quickly and recitate him and although breathing was resumed and he is in the NICU, we don't know if he will survive or what level of brain function will reside. It will be a few days before even the most preliminary tests can begin.
Please understand that there will be plenty of time in the future to interact with us, but that for now we wish to stay as uninterupted as possible while we wait with him to hear any news. We are terrified, grieving parents and have never known such suffering. For now, what we can use most is your love, compassion and your prayers. Feel free to share and comment. We will update when we can. Love, Elayssa and Geoff."
