I am asking on behalf of my brother Ivan and his family. He and his wife and son moved from here in Indiana (where I live) to Lafayette, Louisiana so that he could go back to school and further his study of biology at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In Louisiana they were blessed to welcome another son. :) His wife doesn’t “work” although raising two boys is definitely a difficult job. Ivan and his wife are the kind of couple that give me hope that some people were born to find that specific other person…and did!
They were renting a house for a couple of years but the owner decided to sell it so they moved to another house. This house just took on waist level flooding (obviously the pictures were taken before it got that high)!! Fortunately the older son was at school and Ivan was at the university last Friday so Ivan was able to get him when the flooding happened. However, Audra was home with the 2 year old. She took him to a neighbor’s house when water started coming into the house. However she stayed because of their multiple pets (hey, Ivan is a biologist). They had a plan, which they ended up needing to use, to get Audra evacuated by boat if they needed to. By the time Audra left the house she had been in the flooded house alone for more than 24 hours and the water had gotten waist deep.
Thankfully they are all alive but they lost everything…the only thing that they have insurance on is their vehicle that was flooded up to the windows. Their flood insurance would have been as much as their rent (literally), and they were already budgeting tightly on the one income. They only planned to stay in the house long enough for Ivan to finish his degree.
At this point they only own the clothes that they had on that day. Their furniture, cooking supplies, clothes etc were and still are all covered in (sewage filled) water. Their son doesn't even have school uniforms anymore. They haven’t seen each other in 4 days now because Ivan cannot get back to their neighborhood yet. They haven’t been able to form a solid plan of where to live and how to pay for anything. With Ivan in school they have been planning for their future not saving for their future. Yes, you should read that to mean they have no savings…..
Anything helps. Obviously money is the most transportable although I will be going down with supplies. I am not asking you to empty your own savings. At this point, anything and everything helps. They resisted letting me and others who asked post on here asking for help, but at this point they have no other choice. Thank you for reading this and thank you in advance for your help.
All monetary donations will be given to Ivan and Audra to buy food, clothes, temporary shelter, and eventually furniture.
They (not I) are the ones with access to these gofundme funds.
