… Eshete’s Cats
Donation protected
The Eshete colony, also know As the south BGI or DOT cats, are sadly in trouble. These mostly senior cats are looking very rough!! We’d like to re- vet many of them. Update vaccines and get them a grooming. They all have painful dreadlocks.
A handful of years ago the DOT took over a strip of land along the Columbia street bike path which was previously run by the BGI (Brooklyn Greenway Initiative), the DOT luckily were only using 1/2 of the site so all the kitties were still able to have 1/2 of a field to be safe in, play in and where we (the cat lovers of @bkwaterfrontcats) were able to build and maintain winter shelter for all Eshetes cats.
This year everything changed. Late summer and this Fall, the DOT have now taken over the entire site, the entire strip of field, and now is in the process of black topping it. Soon there will be huge trucks and equipment on the site with DOT Bridge Dept that keeps the snow off our city’s bridges. Plus Huge piles of salt will be delivered and stored there on a regular basis.
But this is not even the worst part of the story, the worst part is: The DOT Will NOT Let US PUT Winter SHETERS FOR ESHETE’s CATS. For years the cats have gotten use to
Us providing shelters for them. And now we are worried they won’t know how to keep themselves dry and warm.
The DOT did leave a small area for the north BGI- DOT cats, @bkwaterfrontcats, but sadly Eshetes cats, the south cat, just do not feel at home with the north cats. It’s two very distinct colonies. Like Two huge, but very different families. So thus far the south cats have not joined the north cats.
Hopefully Eshetes kitties will find dry areas to shelter, here or there on the port… but We are still desperately trying to communicate with the DOT to get permission from them to place winter shelters on their sites for The cats (feel free to reach out if you’d Like to help Us in this effort ) but for now …
all we can do is keep them well fed, which Will also keep them healthy. Would you help us keep THe kitties well fed? We have an Amazon wishlist or you can donate thru this gofundme page. Thank you!!
