There are those of us that avoid storms.
And then there are those that head into them.
Dillon Walker is not a first responder, he’s a 23-year old father and sole custodian of an adoring baby daughter.
But when the blizzard slammed Lubbock last weekend with record-breaking ferocity, he was one of those that responded first.
When he was headed home from the store Sunday and saw someone stranded tire deep in snow, he pulled over to help without a moment’s hesitation.
“If I was stuck, if I was in that situation, I would want someone to help me,” he said earnestly.
He worked all night, even after the underbelly of his work truck got torn up on mounds of ice.
“When I was in Midland working the oil field,” he said, “I invested in my own work truck and welding machine because I knew the oil market would eventually dip like it always does. The exhaust is ripped down but I got under there and tied it up. It’s okay. It makes me feel good to help people.”
When he was laid off in the oil fields, he came to Lubbock to raise his one-year old daughter around family and used his truck to earn money. After being pressed, he estimates the replacement of one of the parts alone will cost $600.
Yet he hasn’t asked stranded drivers for a dime.
Reluctantly, he admitted that most of them didn’t even offer donations. The gifts from the few that did went to refill his tank.
By Tuesday, he had helped nearly 100 community members - an ambulance, an army Hummer, discharged hospital patients, people who were trekking miles on foot, folks who needed the grocery store, those who had to get to work.
Hundreds of Lubbockites ran toward the storm, and Dillon is a shining example of Lubbock strength.
We want to help Dillon repair his work truck because it his only source of income right now. This good Samaritan put his livelihood on the line for his community and we want to give back. Our goal is $1500 and all funds will go to help him get his truck back in working condition.
