Hello my name is Jude

I am currently nine years old, and I was born
with a rare genetic disorder, so it doesn’t have a name. When I was born, the doctors said I
might not survive the night and that I may not be compatible with life, but here I am, and
where I plan to stay.

Along with my genetic disorder (if that wasn’t enough) I also have a heart defect, cerebral
palsy, scoliosis of the spine, Trigonacephaly,
cortical visual impairment,ocular motor
apraxia, autism, sensory processing disorder,
and a significant global developmental delay
as well as various other medical conditions. At the age of five, I learnt to walk when doctors
said I might not be able, it took a lot of
practice, but I got there in the end.

My next challenge is to be able to
communicate with my friends and peers and
tell my mummy I love her and also call her
mummy, as I know she longs to hear that word, but I would also like people to know when I’m
in pain or when I need something. You see I am non-verbal and although I am a very happy
little boy I can sometimes get upset and angry when people don’t understand me, because
can understand them and I don’t get why they don’t know what it is I’m trying to say back.

I have been using an amazing piece of
equipment called an eye-gaze ,at school, and
this has helped with me being able to
communicate.
My behaviours have also improved because
people can now understand me. It’s still early days, but when I asked to go to the bathroom
the other week, everyone was so proud of me.

The problem is the price of this specialist equipment is so expensive that I am only able to
use it for small sessions during my day in
school (whenever I get back to school) .
So I am not able to talk to anyone and believe me if I could I would..! I have a lot I want to say

I have a long way to go, but I am very good at learning, and I am very determined to get there, and with your help, I know I can do it.
The eye gaze is a fantastic piece of equipment that is used by eye movement
control , similar to what Stephen
Hawkins used . You point to the words you
want using your eyes , it’s very clever.


I know at the moment we are all finding ourselves in strange and difficult times , so we know it may not be the right time
