Dan and Amanda's ALS fund

Donativo protegido
We wish to share with you a beautiful story of love, commitment, determination, and faith. It is our son and daughter-in-law’s story, Dan and Amanda. Dan has recently been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), and this gofundme request is to help Dan and Amanda with the many expenses that they have.

Dan and Amanda met each other through a mutual friend that was part of a bowling league. Both were students at NIU. Their friend invited some members of the bowling league to go to a favorite hangout that has country line dancing. While encouraging each other to learn country line dancing, Dan and Amanda’s relationship blossomed, and eventually they got engaged and were making plans for a 2017 wedding.

Those plans changed when he received a diagnosis of ALS in April of 2016. He and Amanda had been in a car accident (drunk driver hit them head on) a few months prior to the diagnosis, and shortly thereafter Dan was having difficulty walking. We didn’t know he had ALS at the time, and it seems that the accident has accelerated the disease. In a few short months, Dan went from dancing with his beautiful fiancee to struggling to walk, to struggling to stand, to being in a wheelchair. He also lost all function of one arm.

Knowing that ALS has no treatment and no cure, we know many people may have chosen to cancel plans for a future together. Instead, Amanda and Dan have chosen to show true love and commitment to each other, and one month after the diagnosis, they said their “I do’s.”

Dan is a veteran of the US Marine Corps (Okinawa and Afghanistan). After completing his time of service, he attended NIU. With one year remaining until graduation, ALS has made it impossible for him to complete his studies. Amanda has one semester of study to complete before her graduation from NIU.

The many expenses that Dan and Amanda face are the reason we ask you to consider donating to this gofundme. Their home has undergone remodeling to make the bedroom and bathroom fully handicap accessible. A van with a wheelchair ramp allows Dan to travel from place to place, but the cost of the van, including fuel costs is significant. A variety of pieces of medical equipment are needed to help with Dan’s needs. Many of these expenses still need to be paid for. We thank you in advance for helping them through your kind donation.
