Sleep number mattress for Veteran
Donation protected
At one point during my 14 years of active duty in the Marine Corps I had the pleasure of serving with a gnetleman named Christopher Genetti. He is a veteran of the war in Iraq and a medically retired Gunnery Sergeant. Gunnery Sergeant Genetti broke his back during a firefight in Baghdad. Because he was the Platoon Commander as an enlisted Sergeant (which is unheard of) he refused medical treatment to stay with his Marines and lead them through to the end of the deployment where he recieved a Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing device for valor, and a Purple Heart. As a result, Gunny Genetti recieved a controversial surgery that led to more pain and paralysis then he had before. He is in his late 30's and has walked with a cane since his early 30's. Due to all the scar tissue in his back, even the most qualified of orthopedic surgeons won't touch him. He is in constant excrutiating pain, and his body is slowly decaying with signs of attrophy. One of the biggest issues is that he can't sleep, nor can he afford a decent mattress to sleep on. The VA has ignored his request for a good mattress and offered a hospital bed instead, which wouldn't do him any good comfort wise. This would also keep him in separate sleeping quarters of his wife of over 16 years. He is a dedicated father of three, a loving husband, and is highly involved in his church as an assistant pastor. The pain and suffering he goes through makes these things difficult and keeps him from being the husband, father and pastor that he wants to be. Always one to dedicate his time to helping others, Chris bends over backwards for anybody that needs help and puts their needs above his. I consider him not only the best warrior and Marine I have ever met, but the best friend and mentor I have ever had. The least I can do for him is to try and get him a decent bed for some decent sleep.
