Hello everyone,
My name is Sylida Wright, born and raised in Jamaica, but I have lived in the United States of America for over ten years. Even though I now live abroad, Jamaica is still home to me — I visit multiple times a year to be with my loved ones and to reconnect with the island and people that shaped who I am. The warmth of the people, the vibrant culture, and the strength of our communities are a constant reminder of where my heart truly belongs.
About Me & My Connection to This Cause:
I am reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your help. My family, friends, and the people of Jamaica have been deeply affected by the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa. The storm tore through communities across the island, leaving behind heartbreak and destruction. Many families have lost their homes entirely, while others are struggling with damaged roofs, flooded rooms, and no access to clean water or food. Clothes, furniture, and precious memories — all gone in a matter of hours.
I grew up in some of the areas hardest hit and remain closely connected to them through family and lifelong friends. The people affected are not strangers — they are the same neighbors, elders, and children I have known all my life.
Since Hurricane Melissa:
Countless people are left without the basics we often take for granted:
- No roof over their heads
- No food to eat
- No clothes to wear
- No safe place to call home
Everywhere you turn, there are families trying to rebuild from nothing. Children are scared and hungry, elders are without proper shelter, and many are unsure where their next meal will come from. Despite the pain, the Jamaican spirit remains strong — but we cannot recover alone.
My Why:
As an aunt, a mother, a friend, and an advocate, I have started this GoFundMe to raise money for emergency relief and rebuilding efforts.
All funds will go directly toward:
- Supplying food, water, and clothing to those in need
- Helping families repair or rebuild their homes
- Supporting local shelters and community recovery efforts
How the Funds Will Be Used:
Transparency is very important to me, and I want every donor to know exactly how their contribution will help. All funds raised will go directly toward emergency relief and rebuilding efforts in Jamaica. Specifically, donations will be used for:
- Purchasing and distributing food, clean water, and clothing for families in need
- Repairing and rebuilding homes damaged or destroyed by the storm
- Supporting local shelters and community recovery programs for displaced families
I am working with trusted local contacts and community leaders who are helping to identify families in the greatest need. I will share updates and photos, so you can see how your kindness is making a real difference.
Every single donation — no matter how small — can help make a difference. Together, we can bring hope back to families who have lost so much. If you are unable to give financially, please consider sharing this campaign with others. Your support, prayers, and kindness mean more than words can express.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for standing with Jamaica during this difficult time. With love and unity, we can help our island rebuild — stronger together.
❤️ With love and gratitude,
Sylida Wright
