My name is Stephanie Camp, I am sending this out on behalf of my 13 teammates on the New Jersey Freeze Sled hockey Team.
For those unaware, Sled hockey is the adaptive version of stand-up ice hockey played by individuals with disabilities. Originating in Sweden during the 1960's, sled hockey has grown to be one of the most popular of the adaptive sports and can be seen in major sporting events such as the Winter Paralympics. Players sit upon a sled, which rests upon two skate blades. Each player propels himself or herself along the ice using two sticks, which have ice picks at the bottom for traction. (A brief video of the sport can be viewed HERE)
The New Jersey Freeze is a sled hockey team based out of Morris County, New Jersey. Members of the team consist of those born with physical disabilites, and others who’ve suffered debilitating accidents including those that occurred while serving in the United States Military. Currently one quarter of the Freeze roster is comprised of players who have played internationally in addition to several Paralympic hopefuls.
The N.J Freeze is one of eight teams as part of the NESHL (Northeast Sled Hockey League). The NESHL is a non-profit organization made up to provide these athletes a location to exhibit their abilities as well as govern the teams during seasonal play.
This will be our 6th season as part of the league. In the past five seasons the team has placed no lower than 4th in every year.
The Freeze is hoping to raise $8,000 with the goal of funding league fees and sustaining the program through the 2016-2017 season. Ice time, travel, and equipment are all factors that have limited the growth of the program. Every penny raised will go towards minimizing these limitations. No donation is too small and anything you could spare is greatly appreciated.
