Baby Kiaan Munge began his life on this earth too early, at 24 weeks! His due date was Sept 3, 2016, but he took his first breath on May 18, 2016. At 22 weeks of pregnancy, Kiaan’s mother, Poorvi, had to undergo an emergency procedure to prevent preterm delivery, after which she was on complete bed rest at the hospital itself. Since the stitches gave way, she had to undergo an emergency cesarean section at only 6 months into her pregnancy.
Fortunately, Kiaan has been surrounded by the best medical resources money can buy! He was born in the modern city of Hyderabad in India. The doctors and nurses of Rainbow Children’s Hospital have rallied around him since the moment of birth, and are doing all they can to make sure that this little boy’s fight to live and thrive is rewarded.
In a nutshell, this is what Kiaan has to fight to overcome: he is extremely preterm (24 weeks), with an extremely low birth weight of 650 grams. He has a chronic lung disease due to which he is on ventilator support. Kiaan has a significant heart condition (PDA – Patent Ductus Arteriosus) which may need surgery. He has already been through surgery for spontaneous intestinal perforation. Currently, Kiaan weighs 750 grams and is on CPAP respiratory support. He is on Oro Gastric feedings (feeding tube in the stomach), IV fluids, and IV antibiotics, and will need to stay in the NICU (Neonatal ICU) for another 10 weeks. He needs blood transfusions once every 8-10 days as babies this premature don’t have a fully functional system to produce blood cells.
As Kiaan’s aunt, it is my heart’s desire is to do what I can to help my brother. To date, this young couple has already spent an exorbitant amount of money to pay for medical expenses. Their total medical bill is estimated to be a whopping $62,000!
Kiaan’s stay in the NICU has been an emotional roller-coaster for his parents. Needless to say, this journey has taken a toll on them, as they battle anxiety and sadness about everything Kiaan has to endure.
I would like to appeal to all our friends and well-wishers to help lift the weight of the financial toll on Ashish and Poorvi! We need your prayers first! And then, we would deeply appreciate any donation, no matter how small, because it will go a long way to help chip away at the NICU bill.
