We’re raising money for St. Jude Children Hospital for children with cancer. We are partnered with a ten year old kid named Tenzin, who has been battling leukemia for the majority of his life. A partnership that first started out with just a couple of hangouts has blossomed into many of us, including myself, forming a close bond with both him and his family. As Tenzin’s mom would tell you, we have become much more than just the people that raise money for his medical and living expenses. We have become his role models, friends, and brothers over the past three years, providing him emotional support in an otherwise lonely time. We have celebrated his birthday with him, brought presents to his house for Christmas, hosted multiple events with him, and played video games with him nearly every week. Through his strength and our support, Tenzin has been in monitoring remission for nearly six months and has even been able to start going to school on a regular basis. As Tenzin’s mom would tell anyone, “He is so comfortable asking them to talk to him or do something with him he’s not like that with everybody,” and “A lot of that has to do with the fact of how the guys were so welcoming and just kind of treated him like any other kid. He didn’t feel like the kid with cancer. I feel for him, he just really loves to be able to tell people he has college friends.” However, even with all of the positive news, his family still has persisting financial struggles along with many of the 8,000 children St. Jude treats per year. Fortunately St. Jude provides these kids with free treatment, but that means that they rely on these donations for support and to fund their research.
