Sitting down to write this has made me distinctly aware that since I started out as Lauren's coworker, and over the last five years also became her friend, I'm a part of only one facet of her life. In this public place, please bear with me as I wish to include those who also know her as a neighbor, family member or patron.
Lately, Lauren's absence has been felt acutely as she took medical leave to be with a family member who was battling cancer. Many of you have come by and when faced with her closed office door, have asked me how she is. I have made sure to tell her of your care and concern as you try respect her privacy, and it has warmed her heart.
This morning Lauren called me. Despite an excellent prognosis at the start, her family member passed away this weekend before finishing the treatment for the cancer. Lauren is devastated. There was supposed to be a full recovery. There was supposed to be a difficult time of treatment, and then healing; a return to life and work and family.
I’m certain I’m not the only one who, when confronted with a loss like this, has little idea what to do in spite of having every desire in the world to be helpful. So, here I am.
In spite of a cancer diagnosis, this loss was sudden and unexpected. Lauren will be handling final expenses in addition to the medical bills for the failed cancer treatment. Please consider donating to assist Lauren with these financial burdens.
Your care and concern for Lauren is greatly appreciated during this difficult time.
