I wanted to add the obituary I wrote for my Mom

Dr. Niki Ann Eld passed away at her home on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at the age of 63. She is survived by her two children, her two granddaughters and her sister. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, August 7, at 2 PM at The Riverside Hotel in the Tamarack room, followed by a reception at the same location in their outdoor banquet area. In lieu of flowers the family would be forever greatful for any donations that can be made at gofundme.com/2hd9nkk.

Niki was born in Cascade, Idaho on December 1, 1952 to William and Nettie Eld. She was the youngest child in a family of three. She had a brother, Joe Eld and a sister, Joice Eld. Growing up on the family ranch in Donnelly, Niki always most enjoyed taking care of and spending time with the family’s animals. She attended Mccall-Donnelly High School and graduated in 1971. During those years she participated in several school organizations plus 4-H Club. During her participation in 4-H club she was awarded Grand Champion for her lamb project.

After high school Niki spent some time living with her sister’s family in Anchorage, Alaska. At 19 she began her college career at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. At the end of her Junior year she was accepted into the highly competitive veterinary program at Washington State University. There she earned her Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine in 1976 and graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1979.

After graduation Niki began her professional career at the Emergency Clinic in Boise, Idaho where she saved many animals lives. Not only did she provide care for cats and dogs but for several other interesting animals too, from ducks to tigers. Once, she actually learned the anatomy of the kangaroo so she could perform a life saving surgery. She was also a stand in veterinarian for the Boise Zoo and the primary health provider for the Boise Police Department's K-9 unit.

After her time at the Emergency Clinic she began working for Mountain View Animal Hospital, where she worked for 23 years. During her time there she did many things to expand the care provided by the clinic. One of those things she was very proud was pioneering the practice’s ultrasound program, specializing in cardiac and abdominal diagnosis. Niki was always continuing her education and skill set and it was during her years at Mountain View that she earned her Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, specializing in Feline Medicine. This was one of her greatest ambitions and proudest moments. To our understanding, at the time, she was only the second person in the state of Idaho to earn these honors. The time she spent studying and preparing for the qualification of this degree, while also being a full time vet, hockey Mom and Grandmother is a testament to her dedication and passion for her field.

In 2011 she left Mountain View and began a new chapter at All Valley Pet Clinic. It’s worth noting that she had many clients from the time she spent at the Emergency Clinic that remained clients for all these years and through her transitions. The loyalty she gained from her patients shows just how compassionate, understanding and talented she really was. In fact in 1994 the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association honored her with an Outstanding Service award. During her time at All Valley her contributions helped to grow and expand the practice and only just recently the clinic built a brand new facility with her input on the design and layout of the building. She was very particular about many of the aspects of the layout, including a separate waiting room, just for her feline patients. (She had always dreamed of this.) It is unfortunate that she was only able to spend a short amount of time working in this new facility but it truly was a dream come true for her and she was extremely excited and proud of what she had helped create. The All Valley Pet Clinic, in honor of her life, career and commitment to her patients and love of cats is preparing a benefit in her name that will help fund felines in need throughout the Treasure Valley.

It is almost hard to believe that while she accomplished so much in her professional career she was just as dedicated and involved in the lives and activities of her two children, Marissa and Skyler, and her granddaughters, Wilona and Adrienne. Somehow, she always found a way to enable her children to participate in many programs and activities. She was, for several years a Girl Scout Troop leader, organizing everything from cookie sales to camping trips. Later, when her son began playing competitive hockey she played so many roles it’s hard to believe she could find the time. During several seasons she was the travel coordinator for the teams Skyler played for, taking care of everything from scheduling games (one season scheduling over 50 games), to hotel arrangements. There were countless weekends she would pack her children into the van and drive all over the west coast for these hockey games, not only during the season, but also in the summer taking Skyler to hockey camps. When Niki’s first granddaughter was born to Marissa at a young age, again she showed just how outstanding her compassion and love truly was. She always remained supportive of Marissa and proud to be a grandmother under any circumstance. The love she bore for her children had no bounds and it is without a doubt one of her greatest joys in life to be a mother and grandmother.

Beyond her career and family life Niki was quite the individual. Though she never could quite keep up with her large property after her children left the house, she was constantly fighting the good fight and making improvements to her home and yard. The house plants she tended to was one of her favorite hobbies, and created quite an amazing scene in her garden room, and adjacent living room. If you have ever seen the beautiful tangle of vines encompassing the entire room you know this to be true. Her caring and loving nature was extended to all those she encountered, and while her commitment to her career and family left little time for a social life, the friends she did make were lifelong and eternal.

Niki will always be remembered and cherished as a fun loving person with a unique sense of humor. She had enough love to fill the Grand Canyon and then some. The amount of lives she impacted during her time here with us is truly an inspiration. It is very sad to have lost such an amazing woman, and far too soon. We are all together in grief for the loss of the person she was and roles she played. But instead of dwelling in sadness let us instead carry on in her spirit, as she would have wanted. Finally, as Niki often liked to say “You can’t fix the whole world but you can start by fixing your corner.”
