Our daughter Riley was screened as a potential Down's Syndrome candidate at 12 weeks due to a large NT measurement. Since Belle is 27, we didn't think we had much risk, though the doctors we saw in Cambodia and Thailand were both suggesting abortion. We had faith and kept praying and researching for Riley, and after an amniocentesis at 16 weeks in Bangkok, we first heard she most likely had Trisomy X (previously Superwoman Syndrome). The bumpy journey was not quite over yet, as we later learned the proper diagnosis of Turner Syndrome. Even though she looks and seems incredibly healthy now, Riley is already a miracle baby since only 1-2% of children with Turner Syndrome make it out of the womb. As a Turner Syndrome baby, these are the symptoms and medical conditions that are associated with it:
Infertility
Congenital Heart Defects
Kidney problems or failure
Ear Infection
Webbed neck due to cystic hygroma
Hydrops
Developmental delay
Delay in puberty
Short stature (she needs growth hormone shots until puberty to increase height)
As a long-time teacher, what an educational this experience has been for the both of us. However, of course, having zero health insurance for a dependent while making a small wage teaching in Cambodia and now the Philippines has certainly not helped our financial situation, especially since Belle has found it impossible to sing (her work in Cambodia) since the second trimester. Here is where you can help: we could use prayers for healing energy and financial support, since though Riley's heart and organs seem strong, issues can arise at any time of development. For sure she will need medical, emotional and educational help throughout her life. While Belle and I will dedicate every moment to ensure this will happen, a little help from the kind-hearted can go a long way. Thanks for your love and support!
