Floralora Flowers' Water Fund
Donation protected
My name is Emily Sanderson. I grew up on a farm in South Marysburgh and I watched my dad do the rain dance more times than I can count. So I know it's not the first time we've experienced a drought in PEC.
My friend, Sas Long, has a sustainably grown, organic flower farm here in the County called FLoralora Flowers. She's in her 3rd year of business, growing 2 acres chalked full of flowers. And, like many farmers in the County right now, she's struggling.
Both Sas' cistern and well have long dried up and she has been purchasing at least 3 loads of water per week for the last month to keep her flowers alive. Truth be told, this isn't even enough - the conditions are such that the flowers are shorter than usual and their life-span is reduced, therefore she can harvest fewer flowers off the plants than normal.
Hers is not an isolated issue, we know of farmers who have sold their herds because they can't grow enough to feed them through the winter. Sas' problem is not unique, but her farm is (to me, anyway!). I feel as though I need to do something to help her get through the season and keep her business alive. Even if it starts raining more regularily (or at all) it won't be enough to sustain the flowers, the land is so incredibly dry that it seeps deep into the land or just runs off - regular watering is the only way to ensure they survive. (But some rain certainly wouldn't hurt!)
I have set a financial goal of $3300. This is 2 months worth of water deliveries averaging $130 per load, three times per week, plus the admin fee of using Go Fund Me to generate donations. As soon as donations come in they will be sent to Sas to pay for loads of water, and only water. And she will start using it right away.
I can't tell you how much it would mean to me if you could donate, and I am unable to express how Sas would feel (she's a little uncomfortable with the idea but knows she's rapidly running out of options). But the bottom line is - this drought could put her business in a position it can't get out of.
Thank you for reading this rather lengthy plea, and if you can give, please know it will be most gratefully received. Please contact me if you have any questions!
