Hi All,
Mauricio and I need your help.
Mauricio has been incredibly strong during his now 10 months of treatment. His strength and bravery have paid off -- the doctors estimate his lung cancer is over 60% eradicated. His resilience has also bought us time to make progress in moving through the immigration system. We hope to have him moved to Sacramento more permanently as soon as September, where we will be able to be together and where he will be able to receive more comprehensive (and comprehensively covered) medical treatment.
Unfortunately we have hit a real wall this week. Mauricio's pain associated with his treatments has increased significantly over the last several days. The doctors say he needs a serious, sustained increase in his pain medication to get him through this last stretch of his treatment. We have come so far to lose momentum now and jeopardize all his hard-won gains in rolling back his cancer.
I have never been great at asking for help (and neither is he), but right now we need any help we can get. While most of his treatment is covered under the private insurance we pay for each month, extra medications must be purchased. We cannot afford the cost of the necessary extra pain medication and need help purchasing it. I am hoping to raise at least $1,500 dollars, which I think will be enough to get him through these last couple of months.
We live in an unjust world where someone in need of basic pain medication like morphine is denied because of cost. And there is nothing more agonizing than seeing someone you love in pain that is preventable. You all have lifted us up more than once in the past. Any help you can give this one more time will literally help save his life. Anything and everything is appreciated.
Please reach out if you have any questions or want to talk more. Thank you so much. I am forever indebted and grateful to you all.

Good Evening,
I've had several of you ask for an update about Mauricio. I will keep this short but can share more one-on-one.
After a difficult few weeks involving a bad reaction to a chemo drug, switching doctors and financial complications, we have finally gained some clarity regarding Mauricio's cancer. Unfortunately that clarity has brought with it unwelcome news. He has been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. His cancer is in his lungs and has spread into at least his neck. He is young (28) and strong, which works in his favor, but the reality is we face some very tough decisions in the coming weeks. That said, the fact that we have a concrete diagnosis allows us to start honing in on better treatment regimens, which is a positive development.
Mauricio will go through a new battery of tests over the next week to help his oncology team come up with an appropriate treatment regimen. Stage 3 lung cancer is notoriously difficult when it comes to treatment decisions so we're hoping these tests help illuminate the best course of action. We will also explore whether or not Mauricio is eligible for some of the new targeted molecular treatments that have come out in recent years. If you have any oncologist/doctor friends who may have thoughts on this, please let me know -- any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Never in a million years could Mauricio and I have imagined any of this when we first crossed paths. A friend of a friend, we met earlier this year while I was vacationing in Mexico. We immediately developed a bond that, while unexpected given the language and distance barriers, was undeniable. We continued seeing each other after and he quickly became an important part of my life. They say the best things in life are unexpected and that certainly held true for us. On a side note, I also discovered that the quickest way to learn a new language is to date someone from that language (go figure). Now any of you who have been in a long-distance relationship knows that the future can be hard to predict. But his cancer has proven to be a twist in the road beyond our wildest imaginative capabilities. Because who could have imagined it? Yet this is the road we now find ourselves on.
And yet we hold onto hope, even if it may be a hard hope given the nature of his cancer. There's a quote by Spinoza that I like -- there is no hope unmingled with fear, no fear unmingled with hope. With that in mind, we will keep walking this journey one step at a time, and keep living out each day to the fullest that we possibly can, for as long as we possibly can.
Mauricio's 29th birthday is next weekend. I will be going down to Mexico to see him and will take with me all the love that so many of you have offered up.

Gofundme Requirements:
1. How you are related to the parties you're raising funds for.
Mauricio is my husband.
2. A clear statement that you will be withdrawing the funds and delivering them.
I (Jonathan Nelson) will be withdrawing and transfering the funds.
3. Information on how and when you will deliver the funds. For your safety, GoFundMe discourages cash transactions, because cash cannot be accounted for should a dispute arise.
I will be withdrawing funds and then transfering using Wells Fargo, Paypal or Moneygram.
