iGEM Raiders
The Texas Tech University iGEM team is part of an undergraduate student organization known as iGEM Raiders. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center has generously provided the team with laboratory space in the Department of Cell Physiology and Molecular Biophysics. Our mission is to expose the university and community to synthetic biology through undergraduate initiative and involvement in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition.
This year the iGEM Raiders team is composed of 12 dedicated students with backgrounds in microbiology, animal science, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, mathematics, physics, and chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering. The diversity enables the iGEM Raiders team to tackle novel project ideas.
Our Project
We will use synthetic biology principles to help treat chronic wounds by targeting the overproduction of wound site protease.
- For Aim 1 we will genetically engineer E. coli to produce a protease inhibitor (aprotinin) and platelet derived growth factor.
- For Aim 2 we will purify the protease inhibitor and platelet derived growth factor in a bioreactor.
- For Aim 3 we will design a collagen bandage that mimics the human extracellular matrix, and infuse it with purified protease inhibitor and platelet derived growth factor.
We are confident that our findings will contribute to better treatments for chronic wounds, helping millions of patients all over the world. For the 2016 competition, Texas Tech is one of only three teams in the entire state of Texas participating in iGEM. As Texas Tech’s first iGEM team, we will represent the university internationally at Boston but we need your help to get there! We are also looking forward to establishing the legacy of iGEM at TTU for the future.

We have so far received funding from Texas Tech University as well as laboratory space for our research at the TTU Health Sciences Center. With your help, we can finish our research and ensure that travel expenses will be covered for each team member to present at the competition in Boston this fall!
