Hello everyone. My name is Jon Humberstone. I live in Tallahassee, FL and run CrossFit Justified. For years I have been doing all I can to help anyone I can. I'm not one to ask for help unless I absolutely need to. Unfortunately, this is one of those times. I ask anyone who is capable to donate to my cause of helping my cousin Lauren and my brother Greg with their recently incurred medical bills and future recovery. I can not express enough gratitude to my family, friends and the Norwegian Cruise Line staff for everything they have already done. They both have a long road ahead of them and I ask and thank everyone for any help and prayers along the way. I would like everyone to know before reading that they are both doing better and are getting the care they desperately need. Greg should make a full recovery. Lauren's is looking promising but is still difficult to tell this soon given the injuries. The story of Greg and Lauren is below.
Myself and 12 other members of my family (including Greg and Lauren) set out for a 7 day cruise on Sunday, July 17th 2016. It was supposed to be an amazing trip with my our Grandmother and family members not seen in years. This was the first family vacation for us I can even remember. What was supposed to be an incredible trip quickly took a turn for the worst when we made our first stop in Roatan, Honduras. Most of my family booked an excursion to the beach that day while my Grandmother, aunt Annette and long time friend Barbara stayed on the boat. Myself, my girlfriend Ashleigh, Lauren and Greg decided to rent a couple of scooters and explore the island. Ashleigh and myself rode on one while Greg and Lauren rode the other. It was around 11:00am in the morning when we set out on what was a beautiful day to see what the island had to offer. About 10 minutes after leaving the port is when everything changed and the race against time began.
Ashleigh and I were a little ahead of Greg and Lauren on the road when we came to a fork in the road where we were going right. I made the right turn and just after heard a short skid and immediately a loud bang. I looked behind us and asked what that noise was and Ashleigh did not know either. I did not see Greg and Lauren behind us. As I turned around to see what happened, I was hoping to see the scooter laid down with some minor scrathes or road rash on the two of them, at worst. When I turned the corner, what I saw was far from that.
My eyes went to my brother Greg first. I could see that he was unconscious. He was clenched up on his back in a ditch. There was a severe gash on his right knee and I could clearly see his right leg was displaced. With nothing immediately life threatening that I could see, my attention was turned to Lauren. She was unconscious, face down on the sidewalk with her head wedged between the concrete and the tree they both impacted. Blood was immediately pooling around her and the seriousness of the situation began to set in. What was even worse, was that we were alone, on an island with no communication. I began tending to Lauren, addressing her injuries and continuously speaking to her. She had heavy bleeding coming from her ears, eyes, nose and mouth. Ashleigh began trying to find us help. I did everything I have ever learned or heard to do in a situation like this but given the circumstances and location, I feared the worst would happen.
After some time, locals began crowding around. The english was minimal at best. Most of them trying to offer help or advice. One of them was able to contact medical help which was on the way. Greg regained conciousness as Lauren struggled with every breath as I hoped it would not be her last. Medics said it would take them 20-30 minutes to arrive coming from the opposite end of the island. We could not wait that long. The bleeding was heavy and could not be stopped. I made the decision to load them into an offering local's pickup truck and head towards help. Around 30-40 minutes had past when we finally met with the rescue truck coming to us. Two of their responders jumped into the pickup and continued to the hospital. They were first taken to a volunteer hospital and an hour or so later, transported to a private hospital. Scans were taken of Greg and Lauren as they tried to stablize both.
Greg was really beat up but no life threatening injuries. He suffered from a fractured femur, fractured hip, fractured back, fractured scapula, 4 broken ribs, the gash on his knee, a bruised heart and some smaller, superficial cuts and scrapes.
Lauren was not in good condition. She had multiple skull fractures, 2 spinal fractures, a contusion on the right side of her brain, severe swelling of her brain and other minor superficial cuts and scrapes. She was immediately airlifted to a hospital in San Pedro where they were equipped to handle injuries of this magnitude.
Greg has received his first sugery and is scheduled for the second very soon. Lauren spent a few days in an induced coma after having neuro and cranial surgery. On Sunday, July 24th, 2016 she began waking up from the induced coma on her own. When they brought her all the way up, she was able to follow commands, swallow some food, make eye contact, move all of her extremeties, she recognized her mother and asked about my brother Greg and myslef. She struggled to remember some other things but the doctor said that is to be expected and are positive that as she continues to feel better and medication can be reduced that she will remember more.
Thank you to all who took the time to read this. Thank you for any contribution possible. Any amount no matter the size will greatly help. All money raised will go directly to Greg and Lauren to aid in this tragic event. Positive thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated as well. Thank you again to my uncle Fred and the rest of my family for being there and doing everything possible to help them. Thank you to my great friend Doctor Nizar who was and still is in contact with both hospitals to ensure things are being done properly. Thank you to my incredible girlfriend Ashleigh for handling the situation so well and sticking by me to help in any way possible. Thank you to Norwegian Cruise Line for going above and beyond to help us through this terrible event. I can not say enough about how great the cruise staff was. And last but not least, thank you to all the amazing Hondurans who came to help, stuck around to make sure things were ok and even returned some of Greg and Lauren's belongings that were left behind from the accident. Had they not come to our aid, I do not believe the outcome would have been what it is. Cherish your time and your loved ones. There is no telling when something like this will happen. It was a beautiful day and no reason for this. We have been very fortunate so far. Thank you.
