I am setting up this page in hopes of raising enough money to get a portable oxygen concentrator for my husband Dan and to help pay for medical expenses that include the home oxygen machines and bi-pap machine he needs at home to keep him alive. Dan is my loving and devoted husband of 19 years and the farther of our two amazing kids.
A little background: On February 14th, 2011, I took Dan to the doctor for extreme fatigue. He was sent immediately to the hospital. Within a couple of weeks he was diagnosed with CML and ALL and given 6 months to live unless he had a bone marrow transplant. Friday May 13th, 2011, Dan underwent a partial match bone marrow transplant in an effort to save his life. Within 6 months he developed Graph vs Host Disease, some on his skin but mainly in his lungs. The condition appeared to under control with the use of steroids but as time went on his condition worsened. He was forced to stop working his full time job as a Safety Manager for a Coast Guard Base and to retire from the Coast Guard Reserves, a job he truly loved. Dan spent over 28 years of his life serving his country and was devastated when he had to give it all up.
The Graph vs Host Disease makes it very hard for him to breathe and even harder for him to expel CO2. Without these machines he would not be able to survive. Because of the long term steroid use, Dan has also developed severe osteo arthritis in his hips. Some days he can barely walk with the pain. Any normal person would have hip replacement surgery but because of his severe lung condition, Dan is unable to have to surgery. Having the portable oxygen concentrator will make things much easier on Dan as it is a lot lighter than then oxygen bottles he has to carry around now and will also last longer.
Unfortunately insurance does not cover all the expenses and we are left with a large amount of medical bills. They also do not cover the portable oxygen concentrator.
We greatly appreciate you taking the time to read this and, if you are able, we truly appreciate any assistance you can provide.
