Startup for Frozen Charlotte Press

My name is Raeleen Kao.  I am a Chicago artist working primarily in drawing, multi-plate etching, and woodcut.  Six years ago, I discovered and fell in love with printmaking and I am now opening my own studio, Frozen Charlotte Press , which will allow me to give unprecedented devotion to my art practice.

"Inhospitable" Two-plate etching and aquatint:

Ever since I first picked up an etching needle, I have worked for professional print shops including Tandem Press in Madison, WI, and Anchor Graphics and White Wings Press in Chicago. Two years ago, I made the decision to pursue a full-time art career during which I continued printing select projects at Hoofprint Workshop in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood. On top of honing my technical skills, these invaluable experiences made it evident that there are few things which I will ever harbor a greater passion for than the printmaking process.

In addition to providing me with the uninhibited ability to continue producing my own work, Frozen Charlotte Press will develop a publishing program to work with artists in and outside of Chicago on collaborative print projects as well as offer private lessors in printmaking.  A main component of Frozen Charlotte Press will be collaborating with small businesses and restaurants in order to reintroduce traditional printing into everyday products such as packaged goods and restaurant menus. This aspect of the business will serve to expand the presence and appreciation for by-hand processes as well as develop artistic partnerships with small businesses throughout the community.  Past collaborations have included Owen + Alchemy in Logan Square, and HaiSous , opening in Pilsen this Fall.

Part of a series of 8 foot tall hand-carved wood panels for Vietnamese kitchen, HaiSous:

I am forever indebted to every teacher, professor, master printer, and colleague that I have had the honor of working with and who have taught me an incredible amount over the past six years of my art career.  I am so lucky to have such a supportive group of friends and family members whose generosity and support has physically brought me to tears.  Please know that your contribution to Frozen Charlotte Press means more than the world to me.  My promise to you is that every plate I etch, print I pull, and block I carve will continue to possess the same passion, love, and appreciation that I have for every one of my supporters.

My sincerest thank you,
Raeleen Kao
