Paul Clayton and Dave Crowell were struck by an impaired motorist while riding their bikes on July 20th, http://www.newson6.com/story/32517853/cyclists-recovering-after-kiefer-crash-with-alleged-dui-driver 2016 around 6:40 pm. The driver hit them at 55 mph, throwing Paul 150' and when he stopped, threw Dave forward 100 '. They have both suffered enormous injuries although Paul, being the first impacted, took the brunt.
Paul has a broken eye socket, broken nose, 9 broken ribs, a broken shoudler blade, a broken clavicle, a collapsed lung, head wounds and numerous lacerations. Paul owns his family's car repair shop on Harvard which has had to be closed until such time Paul may be able to return to work.
Dave suffered two fractured vertebrae, one broken rib and a broken leg. He 'luckily' fell on his bike after being thrown off the hood which prevented severe road rash as he slid over 100' on the asphalt.
Thankfully, the impaired driver recently released from prison does have insurance, but to what extent we do not know nor will any insurance cover lost wages, deductibles, surgeries, etc. Dave will be in the hospital for days, Paul for several weeks.
As a long-time member of the cycling community and a long-time personal friend of Paul, I urge you to forward this message to others and to contribute what you can towards their long road to recovery. All funds will be given to the Clayton family to use towards medical bills.
As a cyclist and a friend, your generosity is much appreciated.
