NCEFT's Service Horses
Donation protected
Founded in 1971 and located in Woodside, California, The National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy (NCEFT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that offers equine-assisted therapy programs to children, adults and military veterans with a variety of physical and cognitive disabilities. These programs include hippotherapy (medically prescribed physical, occupational or speech therapy conducted on horseback), adaptive riding (horseback riding and horsemanship programs adapted for anyone with a disability), summer camps, special education programs and more. NCEFT receives zero state or federal funding and patient fees only cover about 25% of its budget, making NCEFT largely dependent on donations. NCEFT provides a large amount of financial assistance to its clients, so no one is turned away due to their inability to pay. Furthermore, all military veterans and active-duty personnel are treated at no cost. NCEFT instead fundraises to provide this assistance and meet its operating budget.
NCEFT currently has nine therapy horses, two miniature donkeys and one miniature horse. The therapy horses love to and obediently do their jobs, always lifting the spirits and confidence of their riders. Providing over 4,000 programs a year, NCEFT substantially owes its success to these horses.
Keeping horses is expensive. From vet bills to food to bedding to shoeing, having even one horse is costly. To put the cost into perspective, one bale of hay costs $22. If each horse eats 1.5 bails of hay a week, NCEFT’s total yearly hay expense is around $20,000. Other horse expenses reach or exceed this amount. Receiving all of its money from donations, NCEFT could always use an extra hand with expenses, especially those related to their service horses. NCEFT plans to put some of the money earned from this campaign towards new horse equipment, including new fly masks and sheets. In the summer months, flies heavily populate the barn and threaten the service horses’ health. New fly masks and sheets would help protect and keep the horses healthy. NCEFT’s service horses deserve all the love and support after their years of hard work and faithfulness. If you want to thank the service horses and are willing to contribute to this amazing organization, donate! The funds will be directed towards all horse-related expenses. Donating will lift a huge load of stress off of NCEFT’s shoulders and will allow NCEFT to focus even more on its riders. Both NCEFT and these dutiful horses (even the donkeys and miniature horse) will greatly appreciate any donation, large or small!
