Scott’s Support fund for Multiple Myeloma cancer
My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in may, he will be starting chemotherapy very soon followed by stem cell transplant and will need constant care throughout the treatment which can take over a year. We have an amazing team of doctors and nurses on our side but the financial side of things is not looking good, he’s unable to work and I will need to be home with him to make sure he’s ok, take him to appointments and tests and make sure he has everything he needs. The doctors estimate that he’ll need approximately 16 weeks of weekly velcade/darzalex infusions along with other medications and then we will be getting ready for the transplant which takes up to a year to recover from. They will harvest his own stem cells, do a round of very strong chemotherapy to kill as much remaining cancer cells as possible and then return the stem cells to rescue his body and rebuild his immune system. This cancer is not curable, we are hoping for at least 5 years of remission post transplant with maintenance therapy.
Recovery from the transplant is hard, he will need 24/7 care, sterile environment until his immunity is rebuilt and loads of emotional support. I won’t feel comfortable leaving him alone for 9+ hours a day while working full time. Our family is supportive but I will be his primary caretaker during this hard time. I have never thought we’d be dealing with such a nasty disease in our 30’s, it’s been very stressful the past 2 months and that’s just the beginning.
Who’s Scott? He is an amazing human being that always puts others first. He is a loving husband and best ferret dad. He’s the coolest uncle to his 2 nephews and the best son his parents could ask for. He’s always trying to help others however he can. Loves hockey, woodworking and being creative in general. He’s only 34 years old and doesn’t deserve to go through this.
What is multiple myeloma? It’s a rare type of cancer (1% of all cancers and only 10% of blood cancers) of plasma cells that form in the bone marrow, they overcrowd the healthy cells and wreck havoc in patients body, it weakens the bones making them very easy to break and can spread to internal organs (amyloidosis) especially kidneys. Excessive plasma cells may eventually mass together to form tumors in various sites of the body, especially the bone marrow. Scott is at stage 1 right now with 3x1 cm hole in his hip bone and some damage in his eye nerve that were not sure yet if it’s related but most likely it is, luckily we caught it early so no amyloidosis yet. This disease affects mostly people over 60 years old so we don’t have a lot of information about recovery and remission in younger people.
Right now we need funds to help cover day to day expenses like rent, gas, food, out of pocket medications etc. for the next 7-8 months at least. I would prefer to stay home to take care of him but even with a full time job I won’t be able to make enough to take care of everything on my own.
If you can find it in your heart to help us in this battle, we will be eternally grateful. If you can’t help by donating, please share.
