Hello!
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Kristina Thiel and I've been a type 1 diabetic for over 9 years now.
At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with this difficult but equally managable disease that would be a part of me and my life from that moment on. Living and traveling with diabetes is quite managable, thanks to all of the incredible technology that has been engineered in making a diabetics life a simpler one. The only downfalls of these medications and extremely helpful devices are the lack of help from the medical insurance companies. As a recent university graduate and having moved back home to California, my income is nowhere near what it needs to be to be able to afford the minimal medical expenses needed to keep my diabetes under control. More specifically, being able to afford the supplies for my Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor;
This monitor allows me to keep track of my blood sugar levels by displaying a continuous graph of where in the range of numbers those levels can be. Most importantly, it helps keep me aware of which direction those numbers are headed during the night or while I am busy working or exercising. Without this monitor, I may not wake up to the sound of it beeping telling me my blood glucose levels are too low and I need some juice or sugar STAT. In many ocasions it has kept me from bottoming out and sliding into a diabetic coma, or even ending up in the ICU again due to Diabetic Keto Acidosis where my glucose levels are dangerously high.
It is not an easy thing to do and has taken some time to build up the courage to make this but I can no longer hold off. All I am asking is for the smallest bit of financial help so I am able to continue using these life saving technologies and am able to stay healthy and active, without letting this disease take over my life. It would mean the world to me and would allow me and my family to financially focus on other important necesities.
