On the morning of Friday, July 8, 2016 at approximately 5am, our lives changed drastically as we watched in horror our home and all of our belongings be destroyed by a fire caused by our living room wall heater.
Our Bernal Heights home in San Francisco, California was built in 1907 and bought by our grandparents in the 1940s. When our grandparents passed away, they left the house to us, and up until July 8th, we lived in this house, loved our home, and had dreams of raising our families in this home. We are tremendously saddened by our loss but count all of our blessings and are so thankful to be alive today. We hope to not lose the option to live in Bernal Heights and to rebuild our home.
Who we are: Joey and Eyad are brothers and natives to San Francisco. Jessie, Eyad’s fiancé came to San Francisco seven years ago to pursue her education, met Eyad in 2013, and stayed after graduating from college, as San Francisco quickly became her home. Joey is a store manager at a local work clothing and shoe retail store. Eyad is a San Francisco Unified School District teacher who teaches first grade at a title one inner city school in the Mission district. Jessie is a paralegal at a San Francisco law firm and an advocate for youth in the Juvenile Justice system and Child Welfare system. We are all hard working individuals who work in professions we are passionate about and professions that allow us to make a difference in other people’s lives on a daily basis.
We have received an overwhelming amount of support and encouragement from so many friends and neighbors, and even strangers in this process, and are extremely grateful to people who have offered to help in any way that they can.
At this time, it is clear that we do not have a sufficient amount of money to pay for the damages caused by the fire to our home and neighbors’ homes, or to pay for the reconstruction of our home, so we wanted to provide people with way to support us in this process. If you cannot help financially, we ask that you please share this page with your network of friends and continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Any and all help is truly appreciated.
