I’ve written a children’s book, starring William. But this isn’t a book about disability. It is a book about how “normal” Will actually is. You see, most books that feature disabled children are written for the express purpose of explaining disability. However, I want to write books that show that disabled kids are just like able bodied kids. This will accomplish two things: first, it will normalize disability, and make it less of a big deal to the average child. Secondly, it will allow disabled kids to see themselves represented in books — to open the pages and say, “That kid looks just like me!”
I’ve found a publisher that is eager to publish my book. They are not a traditional publisher, which means that essentially I am hiring them to publish my book, then retaining all rights to the material. This will protect my writing and allow me to use it how I see fit. This method is expensive, however. I’m trying to raise $5,000 to be able to pay for my first book. Once I do, “William Tries Again” should be ready for publication within nine months.
My goal is that this book would only be the first in an entire series, called “Not So Different.” I’m so excited about the possibility of spreading this message of kindness and inclusion. Would you please consider giving to help me reach my goal of $5,000? We need to get this book published!
