On January 8, 2015 Kristin received a call that no young mother should receive. At the age of 32, she was diagnosed with not just skin cancer; she was diagnosed with the most deadly form of it, Melanoma. On January 20, 2015, she underwent her first surgery to remove a portion of her left ankle where the melanoma had originated and a lymph node to check for spreading. The lymph nodes removed came back positive for cancer, thus a second surgery was performed and all the lymph nodes from her left groin were removed leaving her with lymphadema and unable to walk normally. On March 31, 2015, she received the results of her PET scan stating that there were no more signs of cancer. She began an immunotherapy treatment scheduled to be continued over the course of 12 months that left her extremely sick and unable to perform many daily activities. Two weeks before ending the 12 month session, March 15, 2016, she was informed that her cancer had come back with a fury but was contained yet again to her left leg. She began a new immunotherapy treatment and after four doses a repeat PET scan was completed. On June 30, 2016, she received the news that her Melanoma had intensified and spread to her abdomen, lungs, and neck, and her condition was elevated to Stage 4. She is beginning her third drug therapy in hopes of ridding her body of this cancer.
