AML Picked The Wrong Cheerleader: Sav’s Fight

On Wednesday June 16th, Savannah Gunn was admitted to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa with a most likely diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). While the diagnosis is still new and additional tests will take place to confirm their findings one thing is clear, this is an amazing family that will be facing several unimaginable obstacles in the upcoming months. “I was going to wait until we had some time to process, gain more answers and catch our bearings from the last two days before I posted but our amazing village is already showing up in so many ways and I want to keep everyone updated and ease some
of the communication and updates.
Sav has had some petechiae and abnormal bruising over the last couple of weeks that we had been watching and warranted some blood work. We received a call last night that she needed to go to the ER for evaluation as her labs were acutely abnormal. Thank you Courtney Shelquist Huston for all of your expertise and support. For my medical friends she was anemic with platelets of 10. We spent the night eyes wide open with many thoughts and fears that were validated this morning when we learned of her results and our plan over the coming days.
Our sweet girl is likely fighting Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia based on her initial pathology review. They are 98% certain that is what we are facing at this point, 100% it is leukemia just getting more granular on the type. She will undergo a bone marrow biopsy and have a port placed tomorrow morning. Her fight will begin tomorrow afternoon following pathology review of the biopsy.
We truly can’t thank everyone for all of the calls, texts, messages, thoughts, prayers and for all of the love for our girl. We know this journey will not be easy but have no doubt that our Savvy girl will kick this especially with the amazing support team that she has behind her. #savstrong“
