Oona MacKay suffered a brain injury during birth, the cause of which has yet to be determined. This injury caused seizures and prompted a trip to Beth Israel's NICU. She spent 16 days there, continuously monitored. To capture the seizures, which was successful early on, Oona was put on three different seizure medications. Due to the sedative nature of the meds, she was unconscious for the first week and received supportive oxygen while she slept deeply.
Despite a rough start, Oona's condition improves steadily. In the NICU, she steadily outgrew the warming bed, the oxygen cannula, and even pulled out her own feeding tube! Now that she is home, she continues to progress physically. While she does especially like to look to the left, she has full range of motion and is exploring it more and more each day. Chiropractic adjustments and motor therapy ensure continuous advancement. Until the age of three, she will have support from the wonderful folks at Early Intervention.
We don't know if Oona will have difficulty developmentally. The areas of her brain that sustained damage were related to walking, talking and learning. Her sight may also be affected. But infant brains are so elastic, she may sail through life and surprise us all. At the moment, she seems completely age-appropriate and we are so grateful for all of your prayers and support. You have made all the difference for us in what was such an exhausting and emotional time. To ask for more has been a difficult choice. But when we began receiving the medical bills for her care, the gentle suggestions to start this page hit home. "Thank you" doesn't begin to encompass the depth and breadth of our gratitude for your love. Your support, in all its forms, means the world to us.
