This post is to give folks the chance to help out a tough (and lucky) dog.
On my way to work Friday, July 15th, I saw an injured little dog lying in the carpool lane of San Tomas under the I-280 overpass, apparently victim of a hit-and-run. I pulled over to help, but he got spooked when I got out of my car & started hobbling away into traffic. I froggered my way after him and snatched him up in a towel (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was right!). He was covered in blood and scared to death, but he turned out to be really sweet once he realized I was there to help. I actually had to pull over on the way to the vet when he caused a mini crisis by trying to come over and sit on my lap. . Dr. Jennifer Lawrence and the team at Santa Clara Animal Hospital did a great job caring for him all day. They asked me what to name him, so the first thing I came up with was "Sam Tomas".
Based on his injuries, it appears that this tough little guy had been hit by a car a few days ago, then hit AGAIN the morning I found him. He has a lot of partially healed wounds in addition to his new ones, but the worst of it is his dislocated hip. The vet was unable to pop it back in place, so he will need Femoral Head Osteotomy (FHO) surgery, along with a good ol' fashioned neutering. Since the hip is a ball-and-socket joint and his is basically wrecked, they will have to remove the ball at the top of his femur to reconstruct the joint. Apparently, this surgery is pretty common and small dogs do really well afterwards.
Sam Tomas is an un-neutered poodle/terrier mix and he has no ID chip and had a collar with no tags. We're guessing he is ~6 years old. I have searched local lost dog sites and posted about him on NextDoor as due diligence to locate the owner, but it's pretty obvious that this dog would be better off under new management. So the plan is to give Sam a new home with my family (which includes 2 kids under 3 and a golden retriever).
The cost of Sam's surgery, along with a new doggie bed and a squeak toy comes to $1700. I was amazed at the feedback on Nextdoor and have set this fund up by popular demand :). Any help to defray Sam Tomas's surgery cost is greatly appreciated (and super good karma)!
