This is our little miracle. My pregnancy just over two years ago was going great, we were ecstatic to find out we were having a boy, our family was complete, we already had a beautiful little girl at home. Then around 32 weeks a routine sonogram turned our world upside down. As we sat at the appointment being so excited to see our little boy, the technician looked at my husband, my two year old and me. He said he would be right back he needed to speak with the doctor. When he returned, he and the doctor informed us there was a problem with our little boys heart, we would need to see a cardiologist as soon as possible. Needless to say the rest of that night was a blur. We were trying to hold it together for our almost three year old, all she could ask was why we were crying.
The last few weeks of my pregnancy was filled with doctors appointments, there were echocardiograms, biophysical exams, sonograms, and genetic testing. Our little boy was due the end of June, we met with the hospitals and doctors to make decisions no parent should have to and to make sure they were ready for our little boys arrival. We were given the worst case scenario and told to prepare ourselves. Our son would need surgery after his birth, the only question remaining was how soon. It was a waiting game until his arrival. We were terrified we would lose our son, before he was even here a day.
Our son chose his own day to come and everyone rushed to be ready. We were terrified! He came out and gave a little cry he was rushed away by doctors and checked over. He was taken to the NICU where he was given medication to keep his heart thinking he was still in me( to help buy time), and he was placed on a breathing tube. All of this in the first few minutes of his life. I was not able to see my little boy right away because of the c-section. Four days after his birth , I was released from the hospital and we followed the ambulance that was taking our son over an hour away to have his surgery. We left our daughter with family and commuted everyday to they city either by car, train, subway or bus. We would leave early in the morning, spend the whole day at our sons side, then drive home just so our daughter would see us in the mornings. It took a few days for the doctors to decide the course of treatment. Our son went through extensive testing, he remained on the breathing tube, not eating just recieving iv fluids and meds. As the days passed he was getting weaker, the doctors decided it was time even though he was so small. He was getting tired. He had ivs in his head because his veins were so fragile. We held our son for the first time a few days before the surgery. I remember asking the nurse at that point if my son was going to die..her answer was...he is getting weak..its time. He had his repair for TOF at twelve days old.
Marc is doing well right now, but he will need a few more procedures in the future, he will need a pulmonary valve( his is currently mesh), and maybe some catheter procedures as he has severe narrowing of the veins leading to his lungs.
We are asking for help to cover the many medical bills, our insurance did not cover everything. We owe doctors and Hospitals. Every visit to the Doctor adds even more to the bills. We are struggling to keep up. We are asking for whatever help you can give. Whether it is a prayer for our little boys continued strength , or a donation to help cover the bills now and in the future.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
