Saving lives and helping people regain their health has always been my dream. My family in Taiwan couldn't afford to put me through the medical school I was accepted to, so I worked very hard for years to raise money to pay the tuition myself. Luckily, I was able to earn enough to put myself through school in NYC, and I passed each semester with excellent grades. I feel more certain now that becoming a physician's assistant is my destiny. I have felt productive and motivated while practicing. I am now about to enroll for my last two semesters in medical school, and everything has seemed perfect. However, I have just received some bad news. Two months ago, I had an abnormal Pap smear report. The doctor immediately ordered more lab tests to screen for cancer. The result crushed me. I have always been a healthy person, and have followed a very healthy diet. I never thought that one day I would come close to getting cancer. However, the doctor's news was that I indeed have cervical cancer, and that I need to undergo a hysterectomy and a number of cycles of chemo in order to save my life. I wasn't prepared for this tragedy. I thought I was so close to being able to start my new chapter of working in the hospital. I didn't expect to end up in the hospital myself, as a patient, especially not like this. I am only an international student in NYC and I am without financial support. The doctor has said it will take me six weeks to recover after the surgery. I have no way of paying my rent, tuition, and other living expenses without being able to work. This is a very hard time for me. The possibility of losing the ability to bear a child is not even as scary as losing the ability to pursue my dreams in general. I need everyone's blessing, and I need everyone's help to fight the cancer and complete my education. The love I receive from every one of you will strengthen me to keep going. Please help me if you can, and keep me company as I endure through this tough situation.
