On Wednesday July 13th, Kayla, her sister, and seven year old niece were in a terrible four wheeler accident. All were transported to the hospital by ambulance, however, Kayla suffered much more severe injuries than her two passengers. These injuries include:
A fractured right shoulder, a severely sprained AC ligament in her left shoulder, broken left shoulder blade, all 12 ribs broken in the back and 8 are broken up front, seven broken vertebrae in her spine, and two broken hinges on her spinal chord. Due to the life-threatening trauma that Kayla endured, she was airlifted to the trauma ICU in Memphis for further evaluation.
Thankfully, Kayla did not suffer from any paralization. However, she has a VERY long, extensive, road to a full recovery ahead of her.
For those who know Kayla, and her amazing, active, personality, you know how much she enjoys spontaneous outings with her husband, friends, and family. On any given weekend you can find Kayla canoeing, hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, or enjoying any of her favorite sports and any other outdoor activities.
The first to put a smile on anybody's face, of course Kayla has not sacrificed that part of her attitude. Since the accident, she has stayed incredibly optimistic, brave and strong since her world was turned upside down.
Even with her positive attitude, she and her husband, Torrey, still have the financial and emotional burden of months of healing and outrageous medical bills. Although they do have insurance, Kayla has already racked up quite the bill. She was transported by ambulance to the first hospital. There, she received countless CT scans, x-rays, a chest tube to drain blood off of her lungs, and pain medication. After being air-lifted to the MED, she received more CT scans and x-rays, and it was confirmed that she would need surgery to repair the damage to her spine. All of this, paired with recovery time spent in the hospital, Kayla will still have a long road of physical therapy and doctor's visits ahead of her.
We are incredibly overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and prayers Kayla has received by each one of you. It truly means a lot to her, Torrey and her family. That support has helped her mentally and emotionally stay upbeat about her recovery. However, they will need help financially to take care of these and the future bills she will collect over the next several months. Any size of contribution to Kayla and Torrey is MORE than appreciated. We thank each and every one of you for supporting our girl through all of this.
