Mansa-Colley Bojang School - The Gambia

COVID-19 Emergency
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a global impact like no other, however some countries have felt the economic strains much greater than others. Parents all over the world are finding themselves making a decision no one should ever have to make - send their children to school, or feed their families. As we all know, a basic education is a necessity and a right, and such choices shouldn't ever have to come to thought.

About Mansa-Colley Bojang School
Mansa-Colley Bojang School is a school located within Jalambang Village, Kombo Central District in the West Coast Region of The Gambia. It was founded in November 2010 with a vision of making a difference to the education of children within the area. Prior to the founding of the school, if families in Jalambang were in the position to afford education for their children, the closest school was in Brikama, which was  approximately a 5km walk each way.

The school has grown significantly over the years, starting as nursery school with about 100 students, and since then it has grown into a secondary school with over 1,000 students.

With so many students relying on this school for the basic education they need and deserve, the staff knew they had to quickly take action to prevent as many families as possible from making such a heavy choice.  So far they have provided meals for just over 90 students, as well as allowing them to live at the school so they don't miss out on their education. Their aim is to continue providing for these students, and widen their support to as many students and families who are struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, where do I fit in?
My name is Danny Bisby, and I first visited The Gambia in 2010 on a family holiday. My parents had already sponsored a child to go to the Mansa Colley Bojang School after a previous visit. During our time there I met Mucki, the founder of the school. We witnessed the ongoing hard work and effort that he and the other staff were putting into the school to make it a successful and valuable place for children to enjoy their education.

Looking at how passionate and driven they were for the students, it very quickly inspired me to want to contribute.

When we got home I quickly spread the news of sponsorships with my friends and family, and now we are happy to one of their larger supporters, currently sponsoring 7 children to go to the school.

Since then I have made multiple return visits to The Gambia and to the Mansa Colley Bojang School, to volunteer helping the school to develop by funding ongoing projects and even teaching staff basic IT skills, such as spreadsheets and word processing, which has helped them keep organised and pass the knowledge to students in lessons.

After hearing about their programme to support families and their children's education, I knew I couldn't simply be an observer.

Fundraiser Objectives

Currently, the cost to continue supporting the students already on their programme is around £100 per week. I want to help continue this support and help them grow the programme to as many families as possible.

Not only that, I want to help provide the school some basic equipment such as pencils, writing books, erasers and sharpeners, which is an ongoing challenge for the school to supply.

Also, as both myself and Mucki share a passion for technology, we wish to further enhance the students' education with a computer science lab.

Please help me in raising the important funds to be not only provide the basic needs for the staff and students of Mansa Colley Bojang School, but also go the extra mile to elevate their education by establishing the computer science lab.
